The church was built in the 13th century, reconstructed in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the Soviet times the church was was confiscated from the Jesuit order and closed down and severely damaged, stripped of its religious function, and converted into a warehouse.

The Church reflects its original Gothic structure and is pretty big, its main hall being 92 × 226 ft, richly decorated throughout with gilded religious paraphernalia.

In 1979 a university museum was founded there and finally returned to its parishioners in 1991.
