They are cashews, or at least that's what they are called in the eastern lands of my country Venezuela. In other states like Zulia, where I was born and currently live, we know it as Merey.

Certainly, today I was surprised with this beautiful, tasty and nutritious gift. Well, at least that's what I always heard from my grandparents; they used to tell me that the cashew is very good for your health because it provides a lot of Vitamin C.

I remember that my maternal grandmother and my daddy always told me that eating cashew is very good for healing throat ailments, such as inflammation and tonsillitis. I think I can hear my grandmother telling me when she heard me coughing: “eat a cashew and you will see how that cough will calm down”. And it really was like magic to eat cashew.

My grandmother and my dad are no longer on this earthly plane, however, they live in my heart.
In this picture I am with my dad celebrating my 58th birthday and two months later he left to meet God.

In my family we are four sisters and one brother, and I remember that when my brother was 4 years old and met the cashew he thought it was very funny and called it the false fruit, because this fruit has a very particular characteristic. And it is that, unlike other fruits, this one has the seed on the outside. Then my little brother said that this was not a real fruit because all the fruits he knew had the seed inside. I remember that day I laughed a lot at my little brother's conclusion.

JUGO.jpg

My family uses to make cashew juice because it is very tasty, even though when you eat the fruit you get a dry sensation in your mouth and throat and a slightly bitter taste; by the way, foods that leave that sensation are called astringent. Natural yogurt, fish, apple and banana are also astringent.
To prepare this juice you only have to remove the seed, cut it into small pieces and blend them with a little water, a pinch of salt and sugar to taste.

I forgot to tell you not to throw away the seeds of the cashew, since, inside its green and hard shell, you will find a kind of nut that when processed (roasted), becomes a very tasty and nutritious nut.

MEREY.png

FUENTE

When I visit the state of Monagas, I usually buy this dried fruit called merey, which is processed in a traditional way by the inhabitants of that area.
