One Year Of Beekeeping on the Gubba Homestead

Part of being a beekeeper is getting to know your bees and what they are comfortable with! Bees are extraordinary and inspiring animals. They work, harvest, and serve.

Hanging with and near my bees depends on their activity and mood. I hang out with and around my hives regularly and observe them. I can sense when they’re tense and notice it by their activity.

In this video, I noticed their activity and thought they might be getting ready to swarm. They do this if they run out of room or if they don’t have enough food. Luckily, my new hive next to it was also starting to do this and I was able to deduce that my bees were “bearding” instead because it was such a hot day so they came out to cool the hive down. Very neat!

Most of the time, I do my bee work with no bee suit. When I have to be invasive, I definitely suit up. If not, my bees are peaceful and I love being their presence.

I have Carniolan and Carniolan/Italian mix. Would you ever keep bees?

I have watched some of you other videos in the past and decided to start a hive this year. I had a little rocky start with my package of bees arriving with a dead queen but the problem was quickly fixed. Thanks for putting our great content.

Wow you make me want to have bee hives so bad! I just haven’t taken the plunge to see what the fiat steps are and what scale of operation would suit my yard, environment and commitment level.

Bravo for all your progress and sharing your lessons learned!

You're adorable! I live in southwest Arizona and unfortunately beekeeping is difficult here, because the Africanized Honeybees take over hives easily. It is one thing I will not be able to do on my homestead. Good luck with your new hives! 🐝

Hi, I think it's amazing that you keep bees! Bees are such important creatures, and it's great that you're doing your part to help them. I've always been interested in beekeeping, but I've never had the chance to try it. I think it would be a great experience, and I would love to learn more about it.

I'm not sure what type of bees I would keep if I did start beekeeping. I've heard good things about both Carniolan and Italian bees, so I would probably do some research to decide which type would be best for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience with beekeeping! It's inspiring to hear about your passion for these amazing creatures.
