My political journey on campus (The introduction)

I have always had no interest in a lot of things, one of which is politics, not that I had any special reason for that but just the good old “Politicians are liars”, it had always been my idea of anyone wanting to be a leader through an election, things like;

What does he see in it?

What’s so good about it?

Does power mean that much for people to fight over it?

Do they have a reason for aspiring for such a position?

The above stated are the questions I had, funny how people would in turn ask me that sometime later.

First stop, it all started when I had admitted studying a Diploma in Computer Science, at that time I was in Accra and had to travel the full length of Ghana to get to Navrongo where the campus was located, one long journey that was.

I got to campus and was one of the very last people to report to campus and registered myself and courses for the trimester. It was hard since I had no PC yet studying computer science but it didn’t disturb my spirit for I had zeal in what I was studying.

At that time, the society called Computer Science Society(CSS) was made of Computer Science and Information Technology(IT) students, this society seeks to provide the members with needed computer skills for the outside world, as lectures on computer science is based on mathematics over here and we get little practical knowledge too.

At that time(2018) The society President and the other executives made sure to provide us with much-needed knowledge and I gained a lot from that.

After their turn of office, new leadership took over(2019) yet did nothing because of unknown reasons, the Covid came and closed the doors and nothing happened for that administration.

Another came into power(2020) they were the worst, honestly, because there was nothing positive they brought on board and only left a rat tail worth of funds for the next administration to come.

The immediate previous administration tried their best because they had organized a series of seminars for the society yet the members didn’t have an interest in them. After all, the organization had not been how they liked it.

And then me, the current CSS President and this is my journey of how I got here. It started in 2018 when we came and met the current administration of that time, how they had organized many seminars on various topics.

I had the dream of leading a society like that where everyone could grow and plan for the outside world. My dream then was only a thought till the next administration hadn’t delivered as promised, and that was when I graduated with a Diploma in Computer Science. Another administration came in and left us with nothing, my thoughts finally settled and I decided to make a move for the betterment of CSS.

As stated earlier, I had asked all politicians questions about why they wanted to go in for what they aspired for, now was the time I was asked those questions, the funny thing was, did they not see all that was going on in the society? The way members couldn’t even figure out a career path and all that?

The world works by cause and effect, mine was when I’d miss the knowledge I used to get from society. It happened when the society was down low yet we looked up to our leaders, for the glimmer of hope each administration brought yet we never saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

Ambition is mostly mistaken for greed and whatnot but is a very important part of our lives, the feeling of needing to move change, being the actor on not the spectator is was I yearn for.

The Start

The start was hard, the thoughts of what to do, how to do it. All hit me when I started my political journey. The consultations came with a lot of setbacks, you know how the views of people defer on topics and all that.

Also, the fact that people did not want me to make an appearance in the race, all the talks of how late I was in making in intentions known, and the critics of how I wouldn’t be successful because I was a level 200 student and wouldn’t be able to lead because I lacked experience.

The troubles of how to make a strategic campaign plan, the people to be involved, their willingness, the energy they put into it, and what they’ll bring onboard. All these took a long time to be realized.

Then came the demands of others, the requests to gain something when you win because they helped in campaigning for you.

All these and many will delve into the subsequent posts about the journey.

Being a leader is no easy task. Lemme say I’ve been there and you get to realize things aren’t the way you see it from the outside. I’m sure you will attest to this later on. But I wish you all the best as you serve us next academic year.
