Chihiro | Oni Collection #11

avatar

Hello lovers of Japanese culture, the collection that you like so much has arrived again, and to my surprise I have reached the 11th edition, which has never happened before, I always made collections of 5 pieces maximum.

You may be asking yourself is this Chihiro the one from the Studio Ghibli movie, and I will tell you no, I have chosen this name because it means "thousand questions" and I thought it was very appropriate because this girl does not have something that all Onis have, extensive tattoos on her body, which makes you focus only on her eyes, her eyes full of many colors.

Tools:

  • Gaomon S620
  • Photoshop
  • Brushes courtesy of Imad Awan: Download here

🔰Process🔰

-Step 1:

I wanted to focus on improving the outline, using more uniform lines, just to see how they came out, as you know that I do not usually keep them until the end of the illustration, I have achieved these lines using the pen tool, with it I followed the guidelines of the hard sketch and then I used the option "Stroke Path" which immediately generates a uniform and perfect line.

-Step 2:

Then I used the pen tool again, but this time to outline and then fill the whole shape of Chihiro, allowing me to have all her figure in a single layer where I can paint without fear of going out of this area, the same I have applied for the umbrella and the swords. I have also worked on a hard background done quickly with a textured brush.

-Step 3:

Having the different elements of the character in separate layers allowed me to give color faster to the character, since I applied a layer in "multiply" mode and then adjusted the tonality using "color balance", besides using "soft light" and a little "overlay" to illuminate.

-Step 4:

Then I dedicated myself to detailing using a soft brush, taking emphasis on the clothes and on the dynamism of the folds that go towards the hand, also, in order not to make the colors monotonous since the dress was in a similar color range to the background, I gave a strong orange to the hair ribbons, so that the color composition points directly to Chihiro's face.

-Step 5:

The left arm of the girl always seemed to me extremely long, so I covered it completely with fabric and modified the position of the hand, but after being painted, I decided that it was appropriate to return to the original position of the hand, as I was getting a very ugly result and that spoiled all the work and dedication I had given to this artwork, which already missed the tattoos.

I will leave you a GIF with the whole process on it, so you can better appreciate the illustration process.

Tell me in the comments if this Oni should have had tattoos all over her body..

See you in a future post!
