Fun in the water! | Ocean Healer & Holomax Waller Fan Art

It's pool day, Holozing Community!

Grab your swimsuit because the sun is shining bright and the water is amazing! Seriously though, I'm not sure what the weather is like right now in the northern hemisphere of the planet, but those of us in the south are still enjoying summer, and there are days when all you want to do is find a pool and spend every minute there.

And that's why I've tried to create a fun summer scene for my second Holozing fan art, starring Ocean Healer and Waller in their Holomax evolution. Here's where I've attempted to give Ocean Healer a new look, similar to what I did in the Healer traits contest, by transforming her outfit into a one-piece swimsuit with a semi-transparent collar, a skirt, and a vest made of a material resembling plastic that reflects radiant colors. She has a tan complexion and her hair is tousled from having fun in the water.

-Step 1:

Due to the camera angle and the pose I wanted Ocean Healer to have while on top of Waller, I had to rely on the 3D models in Clip Studio Paint. I couldn't find a reference image that matched what I wanted to achieve, but with a bit of patience, I was able to manipulate the model until I got the right angle and pose. Using the 3D model was extremely helpful and saved me from the anatomical proportion issues that arise when trying to create unconventional poses.

-Step 2:

This time, there was no grayscale involved. I used the pen tool and went straight to filling the shapes of the characters with base colors. However, I separated each internal element of Ocean Healer into different layers so that I could paint without worrying that the clothing paint would damage the skin paint. Being able to do that is what I love most about digital painting.

-Step 3:

My first approach to rendering the piece was to focus on detailing Ocean Healer's outfit since I found her face a bit daunting due to the angle being tricky to work with. So, I focused on creating a texture resembling latex, as that's how polyester behaves when wet. Additionally, I reduced the opacity of the layer containing the vest and skirt and painted some light lines to define the edges and give the appearance of a semi-transparent texture.

-Step 4:

And now it's time to work on the face, which was undoubtedly the most challenging part of the painting because I focused her face at an angle that exposes the lower part of her jaw while also showing her face. For this, I had to take some photos in that position to use as reference, but my jaw is wide, so I had to go brush by brush trying to make her face more delicate. Additionally, I also had to use some 3D reference apps to fit the shadows and lights accurately.

-Step 5:

Now that the nightmare of painting the face was over, I could finally focus on detailing the rest of the illustration. I worked on correcting the colors to make them brighter and more saturated, creating a shadow between the Healer and Waller, as she is supposed to be lying on top of him. Additionally, I finally managed to depict the water splashing Waller with his tail, and I also worked on the water, creating some white waves to give the sensation that Waller is floating on the surface of the water and that the bottom of the pool/sea is still far below them, although not at a great depth.

Let me know in the comments if you liked this fanart and which other Holozing character you would like me to paint.
