Bleeding from the nose: What should be done and what shouldn't!

Bleeding from the nose is quite a common symptom. In this hot and temperate country, we are getting patients with nasal bleeding quite often. Today morning, One Bangladeshi patient visited me with a similar problem. I am not going to talk about the patient, rather I will talk a bit about nasal bleeding. What should and should not be done in the time of active bleeding from the nose. Let us, at first know what we should not do.

We should not be panicked: In most cases, nasal bleeding is a self-limiting situation. And, there are no underlying serious reasons for this.

We should not lie on our backs: It is a common mistake people do. Blood may go to our throat and lungs and abdomen.

We should not put tissue or napkins into the nose: By doing it inappropriately, we may damage the inner lining of our nose.

We should not remove pressure from the nose too early: See below.

Now, let us see what we should do to stop the bleeding.

We should sit upright: Above we have mentioned that we shouldn't lie on the back. Rather we should sit straight with our heads bent a little forward.

We should apply pressure on the soft part of the nose: We shouldn't put pressure with our fingers on the bony part of the nose, rather it should be on the soft part. Because in most cases, the source of the bleeding is from the soft part. We should not check on repeatedly to see if the bleeding has stopped or not. At first, we should put pressure continuously for at least 5 minutes and then check. If still bleeding, the second time we should keep pressing for 10 minutes continuously.

We should apply ice: If bleeding is not stopped after 15 minutes of manual pressure, application of ice or cold to the bridge of the nose (on the hard part) may help.

We can use Over the counter (OTC) nasal spray: If there is any nasal decongestant like oxymetazoline at home, we can spray it on the affected side of the nose.
