Creating Transitions with Composition Layers in Kdenlive

avatar

The Mix Clips button is a quick way to add transitions, but it is not the only method. If you want access to more transition styles, using a composition layer gives you much greater flexibility.

Start by placing the second clip on a track above your main timeline. Then move it slightly to the left so that it overlaps the first clip by about two seconds. The overlapping section is where the transition will take place.

Now click within the overlap area to add a Composition. Kdenlive will place a composition layer between the two clips, which you can then select from a wide range of available compositions.

In the example shown in the image, I chose the Curtain composition. It creates a different look from a standard dissolve and can work well depending on the style of your video.

Once the composition is added, select it on the timeline to open its properties. From there, you can adjust its duration, direction, softness, and other parameters to get the exact result you want.

This method takes a little more setup than using Mix Clips, but it gives you access to many more transition effects. If you like experimenting with different scene changes, it is worth learning because it opens up far more creative possibilities inside Kdenlive.
