Almost everyone here in Nigeria likes to eat fish and not just any fish but catfish, this fish is one of the most eaten fish in Nigeria at large and seems to be everywhere so today am going to see how we can start up this business however we can.
The catfish farming requires some items to start with and this items can either be in large sizes or small potions depending on how much you have and how far you wanna go into the business.
couple of months back I visited a farm somewhere in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to conduct a research and while I was there I saw a very large fish alone in a single pond and asked why you won't believe the response I got.
That farm is a government recognized farm so they have a very large farm land just for fish farming and I saw other farms like the piggery and more. They told me that the fish I saw is what they use to hatch other fishes that is been sold to buyers.
Well let's dive in to some things that's needed for local and small scale farming shall we.
Drum/tank: Well when I started learning fish farming in my uncle's farm we started with big tanks, we called a plumber to come bore some holes for drainage so we can change water for the fishes
Frequent water supply: Fishes love water and as a farm owner you need to always make sure there is water so as to change the water they live in when it's polluted
Feeds: Catfish loves food to an extent they can eat themselves when starved and always the weakest ones are the victim of this circumstance so make sure you feed them within a certain time frame to keep the weak from being food.
Treatment: Everything in life gets sick at some point and it's good to make sure you apply treatment to them without prior notice, always try to make sure that this fishes get treated at least once a week.
Weighing and Separation: You always need to make sure the bigger ones are separated from the smaller ones to avoid them preying on the smaller ones.
Catfish are one of the best fishes and also farming them are almost the best and easiest thing except for the fact that it's stressful but as long as you ain't going an extra mile to hatch them then your good to go with just growing and selling them.
The cost of setting up a farm for them if you have a land space shouldn't be more than N1m to N3m but so I'll advice you hold at least N5 million at hand to kick start a business like this.
