BeerSaturday 448 - Convergence FWD (Noctem)

avatar

Here's my entry for BeerSaturday 448 hosted by @detlev with a NEIPA brewed by Noctem in Quebec City. I've been seeing this brewery's cans with this cat-lover design for a while now 😀. I'm not really into it, but I was craving a NEIPA, and this Convergence FWD was the only one in the store. Is this beer worth overlooking the design?

Here is a map of Quebec where I can show you the exact location of the brewery. Noctem is located in Quebec City with a pub in the Saint-Roch district and facilities also in the Saint-Malo district, still in Quebec City.

📜 Brewery / Brasserie :

Noctem Brewery was founded in 2015 by three friends: Brian Pierce, Jean-Michaël Noël, and Yann Gravel. They initially set up shop in the St-Roch district of downtown Quebec City, with the brewery and a pub. Then, in 2018, following their success, they moved their production facility to a more remote location to distribute their cans throughout Quebec. The brewery specializes in IPAs and NEIPAs, particularly their Catnip (I'll have to try it sometime).

Convergence FWD is a NEIPA with 6.5% ABV. It was hopped with an experimental hop, HBC (Hop Breeding Company) 522 from Yakima Chief, as part of the FWD (Forward) program. For your information, these hops are assigned numbers rather than names while they are in the testing phase. Some eventually become stars with real names (like HBC 472, which became Talus), while others remain experimental. Were you familiar with this program? First time I've heard of it. Interesting.
In the glass, the beer is hazy with a beautiful orange color, topped with a nice, thick, white head. I like a good head. A good omen for what's to come.
On the palate, you first taste tropical fruits like pineapple, but the alcohol quickly becomes noticeable. Then, finally, there's a very subtle resinous touch. It's less creamy than some NEIPAs. This Convergence FWD, even though it has lovely tropical aromas with this experimental HBC 522, is less full-bodied and lets the alcohol stand out more. It's still a great find. I think the cats have won me over enough to tempt me to try another of their creations.

Design

Design-wise, as I mentioned in the introduction, the style of Noctem isn't really my thing, with those big cat heads on every can. However, the brewery's visual identity is clear. When you walk into a store, you can't miss it; you immediately notice all those cats staring at you.

Nice to read about how they started out in 2015. I probably wouldn't like the cat staring at me while having the beer 😀

I'm not a cat person too, but the beer is interesting.

What you describe about the beer piques my interest, but what would definitely make me try it is the design of the can. I'm a self-confessed cat lover, hehe. And I definitely wouldn't pass up a can like that if I saw it, lol. 🍻😸

It's true that it must be hard for cat lovers to resist cans from this brewery... Their marketing is good, and their beers are too.

I've always thought cat people drank wine, dog people drink beer 🤔

Their marketing team must have thought the opposite 😀 But it's a good idea because in grocery stores, you immediately notice their beers.

With the looks in the cup, one can tell that it's a great beer. Nice one. But the cat is stirring at me 🫣🫣🫣 Lol

Yes, I also struggle with the design... but their beers are good, I think I'll give them another try, especially their Catnip, it's their best seller.

The color of this beer is attractive. Also, the design is also captivating. Hope the taste is also superb

The beer was good, perhaps the taste of the alcohol was a little too pronounced, a smaller format would have been enough for me. Yep the design with that cat face stands out well in stores.

Thanks. It means that if you're the producer or have the right and privilege to advise the producers, you will ask them to make certain upgrades right?
