Wednesday Walk challenge : Chaudière Falls (Québec)

For this Wednesday Walk, I propose a walk to the Chaudière Falls, just outside Quebec City. On my way back from a weekend of skiing in Stoneham (see Wednesday Walk challenge : Stoneham), I stopped off at these falls for a break. The parking is just off the highway to Montreal. I'd often driven past it without ever stopping. It's well worth stopping for a few moments.

The Chaudière Falls park is located in Lévis, just off the A20 freeway linking Quebec City to Montreal. Easily accessible, this park is well worth a stop, especially with its wooden footbridge spanning the Chaudière River.

We'll follow the photos in order as if you were with me on this walk. We arrived at the parking lot a little way up, from where we could see the falls and the footbridge. As the sky was blue and the sun was shining just above the falls, it was difficult to take a photo from this vantage point. But don't worry, there will be beautiful views a little further on 😀

DSC04967.JPG

However, it's perfect for taking a photo of the footbridge that crosses the Chaudière river and affords a superb view of the Falls. An information panel tells us the date of construction of the power station (1901), which was destroyed by an ice jam in 1970. It was rebuilt in the late 90's, and a park was created to take advantage of the site.

DSC04968.JPG

Now we're heading for the footbridge via wooden stairs and a few wooden footbridges. I really like the sign prohibiting sledging with the risk of falling into the icy waters of the river. But if the sign has been put up, surely people have tried it.

DSC04973.JPG

This is the waterfall just before the footbridge. It's *35 metres high, the largest on this river, which soon flows into the St. Lawrence River. With the warm weather and melting snow, the waterfall is quite impressive with this flow of water.

DSC04974.JPG

We finally reach the footbridge, which is 370 feet long and almost 75 feet high**. It's made entirely of wood. When you walk on it, it moves a lot. You don't have to be afraid of heights. What's more, the weather was really fine not windy, but it was still bitterly cold.

Quand on y marche dessus, cela bouge bien.

DSC04979.JPG

Before stepping onto this bridge, I checked to make sure everything was secure 😀. Some lovers had hung a padlock. I just enjoyed the view.

If we look the other way, we can see Quebec City in the distance (the buildings on the far right). The two white double-pillars are the structure of the Pierre Laporte bridge, which crosses the St. Lawrence into Quebec City.

DSC04977.JPG

We took the same route back to the parking lot. But one side of the park caught our eye. Because of the "spray" from the waterfall and the cold, everything was frozen there. It was really quite beautiful...

DSC04982.JPG

But not to linger there at the risk of ending up like this tree 😀. In any case, the rest of the park was closed off by fences. Even if the idea came to you to go and sit on those benches to admire the waterfall, impossible they were on the other side of the fence.

I hope you enjoyed the walk and discovered a new attraction in Quebec. It's always a pleasure to take part in the Wednesday Walk organized by @tattoodjay. Have a great day.

We’ve got a place like this in Nigeria and we call it Lekki Conservation centre
It looks exactly like this but does not have a fall
The pictures are lovely

I was curious and went to see the photos of the Lekki Conservation center, and it's true that the wooden walkways look very similar. It must be really magnificent to observe the forest from the top. Have you ever been there? It must be worth it.
Have a lovely day

Wow lovely powerful falls. Happy #wednesdaywalk. I love the frozen park. Normally when I see ice like that I am immediately concerned about power outages lol

Yes, it's nice to see ice as long as we have electricity 😀
