Awaiting An Explosion Of Color

Finally Sun

Now that the sun has finally come out in recent days, I am more than happy to be outside to catch those first rays of sunshine. And believe me when I say that I could use it after the long, gray, wet winter without sun. Normally in winter you also have days when the sun shines, but in my opinion, this past winter was mainly a series of gray, wet, windy days. Hopefully, this type of weather can continue for a while because it feels wonderful in this early spring sun, and it also looks great to notice the changes in nature around me every day. The Blue Grapes, the bright yellow Forsythia and Daffodils, and the one Plum tree that is already in bloom.

The tulips are busy, the heads above the ground, the buds almost open. And so we have to wait for the big color explosion that is coming. Only... that wasn't of any use to me for the photo contest this week.

Photo Contest

The theme is "Flowers", but what should I photograph? To be honest, I didn't know. And although I briefly thought about trying to take a nice photo of the Daffodils at sunset, that wasn't such a great idea. I would have had to stand in the ditch to do that, and that would have worked every year except this year. For the first time since I can remember, there is much more water in this ditch than just a little bottom. Now that ditch is filled to the brim and that would cause me to jump into the water up to my groin. Hmmm, no... don't do that. Certainly not now that I have already spotted a large brown rat near that ditch several times.

Then I could go back to the few photos I posted last week, but that didn't seem like much fun either. That's too recent. I don't think it's a problem to go back to older photos, but then just make them a little older. Looking back at the photos is also fun for me. A virtual walk through our summer garden from last year, and perhaps a refresher of my memory... what awaits me again this year. Because although we want mostly edible plants in our garden, we always have flowers. Just for the color and fun to look at.

Phacelia, Bee Bread

Last year we had phacelia, also known as bee bread. I must honestly admit that I even had to use Google image search to find out what the name of this flower was again. I had a lot of fun taking pictures of it. That may be obvious, but I had no idea what it was anymore. When I looked it up I found this name. And that of course says enough. This small lavender blue flower not only looks beautiful but is also very useful for maintaining our bee population. The flowers are very rich in nectar, which attracts a lot of bees and other pollinators. It is hoped that we will have them again this year, I like the flower to look at, but the fact that it is also useful makes it extra attractive. After all, everyone knows that the bees are not doing so well and that we need the bees. If we can help the bees a little, we would be happy to do so!

Poppy

And when I look back at photos and come across a photo of a poppy, yes, then I am sold. I don't know why it is like that, but I just have a thing for the Poppy. They are beautiful, but there is also an association with them, and for some reason, I feel that association too. Remembrance and comfort are the association, and the Poppy is said to bring a feeling of warmth and life. I can agree with that.

Blue Starflower

I think the photo of the beautiful blue flowers of the Borage, The Starflower, is great. The fact that the cucumber herb is also an edible flower only makes it even more special. And I don't know if you've ever done it, but throwing flowers like that into your salad not only looks festive, but it's also delicious. When I see the photos I can't wait until it's all in bloom again.

Chrysanthemum

As the last floral photo today, I chose a photo of a Chrysanthemum variety. This is in our side garden, and although I can't remember when we ever planted it, it has been growing there for several years, and I enjoy it every time I see the first flowers.

Awaiting All Those Flowers

At the moment all this blooming beauty is still in hibernation, but the first spring blooms have already put me in the mood and I can hardly wait until all those flowers with their cheerful colors are present again so that I can go outside with the dogs enjoy their beauty. The promise that this time of year brings has awakened, and although spring has only just breathed its first breath, the promise of all the good things to come is enough to warm my heart, if that promise isn't already enough, then the sun will surely help!
