Enchanted By History And Nature | A Wednesday Walk

(Edited)

Even though life in the Netherlands is not always that great in my opinion, it is way too expensive at the moment, and there is still a lot of room for improvement. However, that's another blog I don't even want to get into right now. What do I want to start about today? That's a walk, a Wednesday walk post, but I made this walk on Tuesday. Is that cheating? Anyways, this time I thought it was time for a walk around Heeswijk Castle. This is and remains a beautiful monument. So my walk became a bit of a journey through time complete with a tribute to bravery, majestic black swans, and the castle in the background.

The history of Heeswijk Castle

I have already made a blog about Castle Heeswijk before, so I will not tell you much more about that now. But imagine going back in time, to the Middle Ages, where knights ruled and stories of kings and queens unraveled. You're on the right track with that idea. Heeswijk Castle is a tangible reminder of those times gone by. Originally built in the 11th century, the castle has stood the test of time.

The castle has served as a residence, hunting lodge, and even as a museum. The towers and moats bear witness to centuries of stories, from joy to tragedy. For anyone interested in history, it is like a book that never ends, a story that is always passed on. This time I haven't been inside the castle, but even seeing the outside stimulates my imagination, and I can easily imagine what life used to be like here. My vivid imagination can catch a dreaming glimpse of the people who once inhabited these walls.

A Tribute to Courage, The War Memorial at Heeswijk Castle

As I walked past the beautiful exterior of the castle I was on my way to another point of interest. The war memorial is next to the castle. This monument is more than just a physical structure. This monument pays tribute to those who gave their lives for freedom and justice during WWII. During this war, a large group of allies from the 101st Airborne Division landed on the grounds of the castle during Operation Market Garden. The memorial plaque is a silent tribute to the people who fought for our freedom. The same freedom that is currently under pressure in many parts of the world. May the sacrifices people have made in the past not have been in vain and may these war memorials be a lasting reminder of the dear price of peace.

Symbols of Elegance and Love

Now I haven't been wandering around with history all the time. No, of course not, I certainly take the time to enjoy the enchanting black swans that gracefully swim in the fosse around Kasteel Heeswijk. These animals have always caught my attention when I see them. Unlike the more common white swans, black swans are rarer to come across, and in my opinion, they often symbolize uniqueness and elegance.

In addition to their striking appearance, black swans also have an interesting character. They are known for their strong family ties and social structures. They can be territorial when it comes to their litters and young. The black swan is often seen as a symbol of change and transformation, a reminder of how unexpected and wonderful things can turn up even in seemingly ordinary circumstances.

A Tower of Expectations and Discoveries

Finally, after a longer walk, I arrived at the watchtower, my destination for this walk. "The Heeskijk". Although my expectations were high, this tower turned out to be a bit different than I imagined. With a modest height and encased in mesh, the view was somewhat restricted. Although the tower itself is beautifully built from natural materials and therefore blends in well with the environment, I had expected more. And so it turns out that my expectations were just too high. Too bad ... but the journey is sometimes more important than the destination. And even with the limitations of the low height and wire mesh all around, I could still experience the beauty and serenity of the landscape. Different than I expected, but sometimes you have to adjust your expectations to reality and enjoy what is there. Not what you hoped there would be.

Natural beauty

On the way back I only walked the first part along the Leijgraaf, quickly dived into the woods, and there I enjoyed several beautiful places that I had never discovered before. Finally returned to the castle where I could enjoy the black swans again. Then it was slowly time to get back in the car and head for home where I had a happy greeting from our three dogs who had faithfully waited for me.

There is a time for everything

Hopefully, there will be a time soon when Skipper can come along on these walks, but to get that done he first has to learn that he doesn't have to react to everything. Fortunately, things are getting better every day and we are moving forward step by step. Don't worry, Skipper walks enough every day, he doesn't lack anything, only he walks in low-stimulus environments, and although the castle is a beautiful environment, it is not low-stimulus, but rather the opposite. I have only photographed one other dog now, but I have encountered many owners with their dogs during my walk. That would be way too much stress for Skipper right now. With patience, however, we always get a step further, and when the time is right, we will be able to have a nice walk together around Heeswijk Castle.

You have good shots. And I like the effect you made in the third photo.
But my favorite part there are those shots of feathered friends ☺️

A charming walk into the past to remember history. Heeswijk Castle is very well preserved despite its age. Nice to highlight the Monument to the Fallen. It is a way to give thanks for those who gave their lives for freedom. Black swans will always be synonymous with elegance. Lucky to have three dogs that greet you with sincere joy. Very nice natural scenery. Nice walk.

Lol ... I guess that I could have gotten away with only posting the swan family as that will probably be the thing that most people like the most. But since I couldn't make a choice about what to add, or what to leave I decided to go with almost every photo I took.
