A daily object that should certainly not be missing from my list is of course my keyboard.

Where would I be without this piece of technology? The time when we wrote letters by hand to each other is long gone for most people. The time we spend behind our PC, sending each other information via our keyboard is increasing by the day. And can even take on the serious form of addiction for many people.

Complete apps are being developed to warn people to spend less time behind their PC, and therefore keyboard. Every blog I post online comes through my keyboard. So you can say that this is an important object in my life.

Two Keyboards

Now I have to admit that I use two keyboards almost every day. Most of my blogs that you will read are typed with the keyboard that comes with my desktop PC. That's also the PC I spend most of my time on. But in the evening, when I want to relax on the couch, I often grab my laptop. And then of course I automatically use the keyboard of my laptop.

The dogs again!

However, there are a few weeks a year when I will post blogs online via my laptop. And this has everything to do with my dogs. As most of you know I have 3 dogs, 2 females and 1 male. And so there are a few weeks a year when Lana and Skipper can't stay together in a room. At 13 years old, Lana is really a bit too old for the ideas Skipper gets into his head during those weeks, and because we don't take any risks, the dogs are simply not left together during those weeks.

For me, that means that during those weeks I also have to divide my time between the areas where the dogs stay. And that means that I switch many times a day between laptop and desktop a lot during those weeks. Since it is not convenient to have to leave work every time you are typing, I make sure that I can do my work via both my laptop and my desktop. That works best for me, and I can divide my time well so that all dogs get equal attention.

Hmm, kinda weird when I think about it. From a keyboard to dogs. Oh well, just goes to show that the dogs are never far from my mind.

Many different keyboards

Alright back to the keyboard. There are so many different keyboards. Man, I thought I knew all the keyboards, but when reading on the world wide webz for this blog, I had to admit that I knew nothing yet! I type with a QWERTY keyboard. But maybe you type with an AZERTY, or even a DVORAK keyboard. QWERTY and AZERTY originated from a design for the old typewriters with the hammers. The letters had to be arranged in such a way that the hammers would not touch each other when typing quickly. Now we no longer have hammers flying up, but the keyboard layout has remained.

Although a patent was already issued in 1932 for the DVORAK simplified keyboard, looking at a layout that would be much more logical to use. The layout is therefore very different. The vowels are all on the so-called 'home row' (this is the line with the keys on which the fingers are 'at rest'). If you take the English language as a basis, the number of words that can be formed with only the home row is much higher with the Dvorak keyboard than with the QWERTY and AZERTY layouts. About 70% of words in English are typed on the home row, as opposed to 32% in a QWERTY layout, and more words are typed with two hands.

It is said that in 8 hours a QWERTY typist's fingers travel about 25 km, compared to 1.6 km for a DVORAK typist. It seems that the DVORAK keyboard was designed by and for lazy typists. LOL.

Got the itch to buy myself a new keyboard

When I was reading about keyboards, especially for this blog, I almost lost my way. There are so many layouts and gadgets available for a keyboard that I really started to seriously doubt whether I shouldn't immediately order a new fantastic keyboard. As you can see in the photos, my current keyboard is not the most ingenious keyboard ever. Nowadays there is a lot of choice, and there are also some things that you should take into account.

A keyboard has become increasingly important in the current time, and people who type a lot will certainly be familiar with the dangers that this entails. Consider, for example, RSI. A well-designed keyboard can help to prevent or reduce this. Ergonomic keyboards are designed for this purpose. But ergonomics aren't the only thing to consider when buying a keyboard. The mechanism in the keyboard is also important.

What's your choice?

Just looking at the keys, do you choose Mechanical, Membrane, or Scissor keys? And then there is wireless or not? You also have to look very closely at that. If you opt for a wireless keyboard, you have to pay extra attention to security. There are wireless keyboards that transmit encrypted data, unencrypted through radio waves. oops! That's not what you want when you start tapping enthusiastically.

Well as you can see, a keyboard is more interesting than I thought. I simply thought it belonged in my series because I really use it every day. But that I could tell so much about it, I hadn't thought of that yet!
