Love it, or hate it, almost everyone has one

Oh well, who doesn't know. Everyone seems to have their hands glued to a phone these days. How often does it happen that you see whole groups of people sitting together, but no one looks at each other. On the contrary, they are all in their own world and looking at their phone.

Once there was a time without ...

I do remember when cell phones didn't exist. (Gosh I feel old now, thanks @rubencress. Lol) You could just go anywhere, and you couldn't be reached. Still, I have to admit that I was very quickly convinced to want a mobile phone. Why? It was really a gadget for me. I didn't need it at all. Just to have it wanted, and I bought my first mobile phone. One of those things with an antenna, and a small display in black and white that could hold about 30 characters of text. And although I really didn't need it, I have always followed the developments of mobile telephony.

It only became really interesting when the first cameras came on the phones, although of course that resolution was not something to write home about. And at that time, no one would have expected that you buy phones nowadays that can actually replace many cameras.

And that for some people even their phone has become a replacement for their PC. People who don't have a PC, but do have a mobile phone. The development of the mobile phone has gone very fast! And in my opinion that has both major advantages and disadvantages!

Gadgets

Yes, I have a smartphone. And no, I don't want this one to be TOO old. Yes, I want to have sufficient specs on the phone I buy. No, I don't have the most expensive of the most expensive. No I don't have an iPhone. I also don't have the latest of the latest phone. And I don't have a subscription either... in that respect you can call me old-fashioned or stubborn. But I don't see the point in taking out an expensive subscription that I don't actually need.

I hardly ever have to call, if I want to call my sister I can also do that via whatsapp via the WiFi. That costs me nothing, it also allows me to keep in touch with most of my friends, and I also hardly have to call. I make sure there is prepaid credit on my phone for the few times I have to call and with 10 to 15 euros I can get through a year. Wouldn't I be pretty stupid to take out a subscription? Yes, I admit, very occasionally I miss internet on the road, but for those rare times I can buy a day of internet via my prepaid credit. That is maybe once a year.

I'm a 'light user'

So you can call me a 'light' user. I don't play games on my phone, I don't do anything with crypto on my phone because I don't trust it. So I mainly use my phone to be reachable, or to make a call in case it is necessary, to take some pictures on the road, and to keep in touch with my sister and friends. So the most important specs I pay attention to when I buy a phone are the battery life, and the camera! In addition, of course, the price. Not being a heavy user, I would be really crazy to want the latest and most expensive handset.

Of course, those devices have better cameras in many cases. And yes, the temptation has certainly been there. But every time I know how to suppress that impulsive trait, which is present in me. And that has always made me happy so far. By searching well, comparing all phones in a certain price range for a long time and canceling out a lot of pluses and minuses against each other, I have already saved myself a lot of money. And yet phones with reasonable specifications, which I also do not have to charge every day. While I still have a reasonable camera quality for the snapshots I want to make at that moment, and besides that ... you can use whatsapp with any smartphone that is not TOO old. They can all call. That is not a guideline to select on.

Conclusion

But to summarize a very long story in a few words. I'm not a heavy user of my mobile phone, but I definitely don't want to be without it! Taking pictures with my smartphone is almost a daily activity. Quickly looking something up, maintaining contact, it's all the little things I use my phone for. I really don't take it everywhere with me, but it's still one thing that just belongs in my life.
