Waiting for Summer!

Not enough Sunshine

Last year it was already a summer with few hours of sunshine, and this year we did have a May with many hours of sunshine and relatively high temperatures, but at the end of May the temperature dropped again, the sun disappeared behind the clouds. And so far, little seems to have changed. The temperature remains below the long-term average and the sun is relatively little visible.

Most days I look at a thick cloud cover and a fairly cold wind blows around the house. This makes the weather not really pleasant to really sit outside and enjoy the time that summer has, and which I have been looking forward to since October. Winters are not my favorite time of year anymore. Even if the winters aren't as cold as they used to be…

Unfortunately, the same seems to apply for the summer at the moment. Where the winter is not very cold, the summers are also less warm. This also means that some trees and shrubs do not want to do so well.

Blueberries

The blueberries don't want to get a tan. And the figs don't even want to grow at all. The tree is doing fine, but it does not bear fruit. The pear seemed to give well, but of all the young small pears there is not one left. Unfortunately, so no pears this year. Fortunately, our cherries are turning a nice red. They are not many, but every cherry is one... and gives hope that the tree will do better every year. This is also a sapling. Last year we had maybe 4 cherries, this year there are certainly more. And it is still early for the grapes, of course, but we can already see them growing. Fortunately, because these seedless grapes are very tasty.

The paprika and pepper plants also really lack hours of sunshine and warmth, and even the beans don't want to come up. Where you can normally harvest beans at the end of June / beginning of July, the plants still have to come up now.

The weeds are doing amazing!

What is going well is the weeds. Unfortunately, that grows everywhere, but the advantage of the less warm weather is that it is not too hot to pick it away. Working in the garden is doable now that it is not 30 degrees. Fortunately, there is a bit more that grows well, such as apple trees. We have two and both trees are covered with apples. And that is again special. The second tree is only a few years old. We are therefore amazed every day that such a sapling can already bear so much fruit. The gooseberries are on their normal growing schedule, and the currants are almost ripe. That will soon be picking and making jam.

It's not that we eat that often and a lot of jam, but in the current time you should be happy with everything you can get from your own garden. And use it gratefully. Besides the fact that it is healthier because we know for sure that nothing has been sprayed, and there are no chemical additives in it, it also saves a few euros from your wallet.

Hoping for a better Summer

We just hope that the summer will still get underway. Officially it is still spring, of course, but that is the growing season. The weather forecast says we're going to get 30 degrees this week, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. Warm temperatures and many hours of sunshine, that's what we need so that the garden becomes an oasis of greenery and fruits again, and the euroś can remain in our wallets.

And not to forget … so that I can enjoy the whole day outside with the dogs in the sun and we are well warmed up before the autumn and winter sets in.

Sounds like summer is taking it's time in your region, hopefully soon a burst of sunlight will move everything into top gear to ripen before season ends.

Stunning photography in the garden, none of the weeds which is good, an on-going problem everywhere I am afraid.

I am not a huge fan of summer but I understand why you would want it to be nice and warm with sunshine for an extened period of time when you are growing stuff. We have a heat advisory here for tomorrow into Wednesday night. Not looking forward to that. I hope you get the weather you're waiting for so your trees bear fruit.

Lol. I used to be a winter fan myself, but that was before our situation changed 180 degrees. Now I just love the Summer. There are too many advantages to not love it.

I used to love Summer when we were kids and had a pool in the backyard. I miss that pool but when we all moved out and my Dad had to maintain it when no one was there to use it.... He wanted his backyard back. Summer does have some advantages. Enjoy your day! 😀
