What I would change on Hive

Coffee before I get my brain activated!

My morning ritual is the same almost every day. Wake up, get up quietly and do my things ... then hang over a cup of coffee to get my brain active, and after that it's time to let the dogs out and take further action.

Browse around on Twitter

This was no different this morning. Often during the moments above my cup of coffee I make an effort to wake up on Twitter. I am certainly not an avid Twitter user, but sometimes you come across things that you would otherwise have missed. And that was certainly the case this morning. A tweet from the HivePeople account got my brain activated ... and I started typing. I soon realized that I would need a few more characters to answer than Twitter allows. I also realized that I had to think about this a bit longer, and not react in an impulse. Because the danger of that is that I may give a response that does not make it clear what I mean. Because English is not my first language, I sometimes have trouble finding the right words, especially when I am just waking up!

Never react in an impulse

So I didn't tweet my response as an answer… but decided to take the time to write a post later today. Because I certainly have a few answers to the question that is being asked.

With which I am NOT going to claim that I am a 'genius' when it comes to blockchain technology, nor when it comes to 'social media'. And also not when it comes to 'cryptocurrency'.

Let's be honest here

But I am a very avid user of Hive. And like everyone else on this blockchain, I would like to see the Hive blockchain and Hive currency grow and flourish. And let me just say it as it is ... Like everyone here I would like to be able to get enough income from Hive to live on that too.

OF COURSE I LIKE IT

Yes, of course I like to browse around Hive, of course I write because I like it… but writing purely because I like it, I don't necessarily have to do that on HIVE. I ended up here because I want to monetize my blogs. And not only me, everyone who writes blog articles here does that for the same reason. We don't have to be secretive about that. And there you immediately come to a problem… because monetizing your blogs is not that difficult. You post them on Hive and you have monetized your blog… IF you get votes at least. And that is certainly not as easy as writing your blog.

It's difficult for newcomers

Certainly for newcomers it is difficult to stand out among the many blogs, they have not yet a bunch of people who follow them, they have not yet been able to build a 'circle'. And before you can do that, you are quite a long time busy on the blockchain. If you have not dropped out long before then because of the disappointment that your blogs do not yield as much as you see in others.

Too many people, too little time

Engaging is an important element on Hive, but it's just not possible to do that with literally everyone on the blockchain. There are too many people for that, and too little time! The tags you use on your blogs can make sure your blog is seen, but tags are once again very difficult. You are easily inclined to use a tag that is widely used, but there is a risk that that tag will not fit your blog very well. Which also creates the risk that your blog will not be seen at all by the people who would find your blog interesting. And because those people don't see your blog, there may be very little to no votes on your blog.

A personalized feed on your blog by bots?

The system on hive is built around the tags, but with these tags there could be done a bit more. I know that many people on the blockchain hate facebook, but facebook DOES have a system that Hive could also use. The facebook advertising system is personalized. Facebook / Google, keeps track of which sites you visit and there the ads you see are personalized. Now I definitely don't want to be hit with ads on Hive. Please don't … But what could be done is a personal feed showing blogs that fit your blogs and thus your interests, this can be done using the tags.

Bots are also created that keep track of whether your blog has been plagiarized ... Can't there be a bot (multiple bots if necessary) that make it possible to create a personalized feed for each user. This can be very useful for newcomers. They often don't have that many people who follow them, they don't know all the tags, and often enough they just don't know how to find the content they like. And end up browsing hours without finding much of interest. And even for someone who has been on blockchain for a long time, this can be very useful. If these bots scan through the content of your blog and use it to place blogs in personal feeds, you will always see content that you find interesting. So even if you do not know the right tags, and have not used them, your blog will still come across by people who may find it interesting. And with that there is a big chance that you will find blogs from people that you never would have seen otherwise.

Improve the visibility

With this long story, I really want to say that the visibility of blogs should be improved in my opinion. Make it easier to post your blog with the right tags, or even move away from tags and come up with a completely new, more user-friendly system for this. Which could perhaps be realized by means of bots. No idea if this is possible ... but I assume it is with the technology here.

Fair distribution of HIVE

And in 2.5 years of blockchain, I have heard many people say that the wealth should be distributed fairly. However, when I look around at the many blockchains, I don't see that much. I certainly see wealth being distributed, but honestly? Hmmm the opinions can be divided, but as far as I can see it is still people who are voting in a certain circle, and if you do not belong to that circle you are out of luck. Yes you can build your own circle… but whether you can still speak of an HONEST distribution of wealth? I admit ... I'm not a Holy Mary and often visit the same blogs too because it's easy, and I don't have all the time of the world to browse for new content. I follow few voting trails to spread my votes more around ... but I should do more with manual curation. And I think this goes for many of us. How this can be changed… I seriously have no idea.

Decentralized ... or not yet?

What I would also like to change on Hive is the fact that there are people who have a reasoning that if you hold certain tokens in your wallet, they will not be voting on your blog. Or if person A has voted on your blog, that person B no longer does this. Sorry, but those are games that go over other people's back, and usually they can't help it at all! We really want to be decentralized, and this behavior is not an expression of decentralization. This is a way of trying to impose your opinion on someone, which doesn't fit the idea of wanting to be decentralized, right?

In addition, I would like to change the fact that there should be MANY and many more people blogging on Hive which in my opinion would contribute to the value of Hive and HBD. To my knowledge this is being worked on but will take time. And that is not surprising when you consider that after more than 10 years of cryptocurrency, no more than at most 5% of the world population actually uses cryptocurrency.

The whole technology is still young, and there is still much to do and change before we can ever achieve mass adoption.

I agree with you in many points. What also makes me think is this mass adoption thing. It could be so rocking good if more people where using cryptos, but i think this will still take a while, there really need to be more usecases and also it has to become way easier to use. For example payment one of the most probable usecases of crypto currency, it still is too much work it takes to pay with cryptos. Compared to using a debit card with NFC or pin code.
