My Reflections on Marriage: A Decade of Love and Learning

image.png

As someone who has been married since 2012, I've often found myself reflecting on what marriage means to me. It's a journey that's personal, challenging, rewarding, and above all, transformational. It has been an amalgamation of shared laughter, joy, misunderstandings, sacrifices, and moments of profound growth.

Do I see it as a necessary institution, a choice, or something else?

From my perspective, the institution of marriage isn't a one-size-fits-all proposition. Its significance and necessity can depend on various life situations, personal choices, and beliefs. For my wife and I, marriage has become a platform where we mutually serve and honour God, which has made our relationship more purposeful.

Marriage, like life, is never just about the joyous moments. It isn't always sunshine and roses; it comes with its fair share of storms. The early days filled with unabashed sweetness gradually transition to a deeper, more profound connection – one that requires conscious effort to maintain. This is the kind of love, 'agape', the Bible refers to – a love that is more about choosing to love rather than simply feeling in love.

What challenges have I experienced or observed in a marriage?

What has over a decade of marriage taught me? The foremost lesson has been about embracing imperfection. It’s easy to look at your spouse’s shortcomings, but love lies in celebrating their strengths. They might not be a great cook, or as sociable as you’d like, but their devotion to family, their excellent parenting skills, or their dedication to your loved ones can be their unique strengths. Learning to focus on the good has truly transformed my perspective on relationships.

Biggest challenge so far?

One of the most challenging aspects I've faced in my marriage is maintaining trust. Jealousy and insecurities can creep in, causing rifts. But I’ve learned that trust in each other, underpinned by faith in God, is the balm to these wounds. As stated in Hebrews 13:4, "Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure...” This verse has been our guiding principle in tackling challenges.

Observing marriages around me, I've noticed that the successful ones invariably have God at their center. This devotion and obedience to God's word seem to imbue these marriages with a strength that helps them weather any storm.

Many perceive marriage as "trouble," as evidenced by the increasing rates of divorce. Yet, my personal experiences affirm that it's worth every struggle if you navigate it with patience, understanding, and above all, love.

We are not perfect couple but we are making the most out of what we have...

Despite being perceived as the 'perfect, happy couple' by friends, especially through our exotic travel posts, we've had our share of struggles. Behind the pictures of Japan, Greece, or Seychelles, lie countless stories of misunderstandings, compromise, and forgiveness – aspects of our journey that seldom make it to social media.

In essence, make God's word the center of your relationship. Love your partner not just because of what you feel for them, but because of God's commandment to do so. Marriage is a path of constant learning, growth, and forgiveness. After all, we aren't perfect, but we can strive for a perfect love that covers all imperfections.

May God help us...

hmmm i get this point, i really love your inpuut on this, God at the center, even though it may seem like it cant work out, God should alway keep us going.
knowing christ and having the destination of marriage that christ has put up should be enough to make any marriage work out.
thank you

Beautiful couple 😍. I also think the same . Marriage is a very beautiful journey in which you will share your joys with your partner and whenever you see ups and downs, you will felt someone behinds you to give you support, encourage and spirit. But I think when we live with someone as life partner than we should accept that man with all of its bad and good properties. That's a true meaning of marriage. Have a nice day dear.

Your marital story so far is indeed an inspiration to many. Making God the center of our marriage is sure a great way to have a successful marriage. Indeed, God commanded us to love , so irrespective of what we feel for each, we should obey God's commandments.

And yes, we are all imperfect Humans and the moment we understand this, it becomes easier for us to tolerate our spouses.

Finally, I understand your challenge of maintaining trust but glad to know you handled it ... knowing the word of God and implementing it in our marriages saves a lot of unnecessary stress for us
Nice reading from you today

Thanks for sharing
