  Carnival is a celebration whose origins are not entirely clear. Historians have not reached a consensus, while some maintain the theory that it is a post-Christian celebration, others assert that it has much more pagan connotations. From the Saturnalia of Rome, to the rituals in the depths of Egypt or religious syncretism, Carnival is in fact one of the most widespread festivities on the planet today.

  This period of the year, in which joy and holiday atmosphere invade almost every corner of the earth, has two characteristic elements. First, it is always celebrated in February, the month of St. Valentine's Day, the month of transition between winter and spring, but also the month in which Christians begin Lent, after Ash Wednesday. On the other hand, we have the costume, which is undoubtedly the other hegemonic element of carnivals.

  Costume is synonymous of deception, of embodying another skin that does not belong to you. To become someone else, you can be an animal, an object or represent a fictitious being. Etymologically speaking, the word costume was originally a term of art that referred to congruence in representation. From "customary dress of the particular period in which the scene takes place", but it could also mean something occult, mystical, even artistic and of course literary.

  That is why we invite the whole community to join our Carnival Writing Challenge, in which you will have to create a literary piece inspired by the costume.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

  • Publish your post in Writing Club from the Front-End Ecency or the one you prefer and feel more comfortable with.

  • Only one entry per participant.

  • Remember that this is a literary community, in that sense, we encourage the correct use of writing, spelling, and citing sources.

  • Remember to use the title: Carnival Writing Challenge | Title of the story.

  • Post in the language of your choice, but always include an English translation (we recommend using www.DeepL.com/Translator)

  • Comment posts from another participants.

  • Leave your link in the comment box of this publication and tell us what inspired you to create your work.

  • Help spread the word about this initiative by voting and reblogging this post.

  El carnaval es una fiesta cuyos orígenes no están del todo claros. Los historiadores no han llegado a un consenso, mientras unos sostienen la teoría de que es una celebración post cristiana otros aseveran que tiene connotaciones mucho más paganas.   Este periodo del año en el cual la alegría y el ambiente vacacional invaden casi todos los confines de la tierra, tiene dos elementos característicos. En primer lugar, siempre se celebra en febrero mes de San Valentín, mes de transición entre el invierno y la primavera, pero también es el mes en el cual los cristianos comienzan la cuaresma, después del miércoles de cenizas. Por otro lado, tenemos al disfraz, que es sin duda el otro elemento hegemónico de los carnavales.

  El disfraz es sinónimo de engaño, de encarnar otra piel que no te pertenece. Convertirse en alguien más, puedes ser un animal, un objeto o representar a un ser ficticio. Etimológicamente hablando, la palabra disfraz tampoco tiene un origen concreto, pero se piensa que podría significar algo oculto, místico incluso artístico y por supuesto literario.

  Es por eso, que invitamos a toda la comunidad a que se una a nuestro Carnival Writing Challenge, en el cual deberán crear una pieza literaria inspirada en el disfraz.

I love carnivals a lot but have never gotten to wear a costume or participate other than watching from a distance. I'll be looking forward to reading interesting entries. Nice challenge, it's getting more interesting by the day 🥰

It is inspired by the social significance that, in our Latin American lands, has this carnival date. In the circumstances that people can, behind a mask or costume, live and provoke; sometimes unusual and unimaginable, insane, I would say; in these collective festivities.

les dejamos la participación de Rincón Poético en el concurso, esperamos sea de su agrado.
Lo que nos inspiró a escribir esta historia, fue en base a un rumor que circuló hace muchos años en los carnavales de mi ciudad. se decía que andaba un loco suelto y había matado a algunas personas, en esa época no se encontró culpable alguno y las victimas quedaron en el anonimato.
