Why do people really hold unto hurt of the past why do all these negative memories hangs on in our heart, why do we find it difficult to forgive one another?.....

There is a simple answer to these questions and that is the fact that we don't walk in love, for love is the greatest. Love suffers long, does not remember iniquity, love is not puffed up, does not think evil, love is not boastful, does not rejoice in iniquity, bears all things, endures all things, cherish and hope all things 1cor.13:4-7 (paraphrase)..

So Bro Eli Emphases on the fact that were wickedness, malice, hurt, Covetousness , pain holding unto the past such exist because.there is no love, is like saying abcent of light is darkness, and were there is darkness there is evil, chaos, wickedness, all these and more will thrive.

why do we remember the short coming of people, the sins of people, the ugly things that were done to us by people because we do not walk in love

1John 3:15: Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer and you all know that no murderer will have eternal life abiding in him.

We all know how God frowns at unforgiveness Thats why Jesus had to illustrate this in a parable of the unforgiving servant who failed to forgive his own fellow servant who owes him money despite when his master just forgave him the debt he owes.....

And grieve not the holyspirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption, Let all bitterness, and wrath and anger and clamour and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice and be ye kind one to another tenderhearted forgiving one another even as God fowd Christ sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:30-32

The entire scriptures is filled with Gods love and tender mecies, as Children of God we ought to work in the light of his word Doing the word as we have been taught, not hold malice or grudges against our fellow humans but to let go of every hurt and pain they might cause us, for by so doing we are showing the character of God our heavenly father.....
