Culross - a 6th century village in Fife Scotland - used in filming for Outlander !
There is a really cool village over in Fife, Scotland called Culross (pronounced cul-roos). Its quite an old village, having been established in the 6th century. It has been preserved as a historic village.
The building above is Culross 'Palace'. Its painted in the original yellow, like it would have been back in the day. The head guy of the town live here and ran the coal mine. It was a port town, exporting the coal.
The coal mine is quite interesting because it is actually out in the water (the Firth of Forth - a sea inlet). This jetty takes you out to it, and the old mine entrance is where those stones are at the end of the jetty ! The coal gave the town early wealth.
What I found interesting is that the boats would leave leaden with coal for foreign countries. Once they had delivered their load the ships had to take something else on board to provide ballast, and they often took back slates because they were heavy and cheap. As a result, a lot of building in Culross have these orangey slate roofs as you can see in the picture above - which are very uncommon in Scotland. Our slate is a dark grey colour.
The palace has a really beautiful garden behind it, and I just loved it. A lot of the plants there seem oldy-worldy ! So I took maybe one or two pictures too many there !
Whatever these are, they are just stunning ! In Scotland our national flower is the thistle - not unlike this ! So I was quite taken with them !
These were also thistle like - so they also got photo'd to death.
Thats the main street above - with the towns clock tower. The trees are all bent over in one direction due to the wind coming of the sea.
As said - I did like the prickly flowers - maybe a bit too much !
I absolutely loved the entrance to the palace (above) - fairly simple - but just beautiful. For info - notice the blocked up windows on the first floor. This is due to a stupid law that used to exist in the UK where they taxed windows. It lead to a huge amount of windows getting blocked up on buildings all across the land - you can see it in every town. It amazes me that many havent unblocked them again - what a shame.
Well thats about as much as I have from Culross - I promise to take more pics the next time I go ! Its a great place, and gets used in films a lot, including outlander (a lot of which is filmed in Scotland).

What a curious and somewhat absurd thing, a law that taxed windows. Do you know what the reasoning behind it was?

The law was simply another way for the government to take money from the people !
I imagined it 😏 but how absurd it was. It is like they made you pay for looking outside your house.

That window tax like most taxes was about the goverment taking money from people there was no reason for anyone to tax windows it is not like the government replaced or fixed the window, so it was just extortion.
The government had that extortion racket last for over 150 years makes you wonder what we have today, government vs criminal what is the difference?
