My favourite coin - A 1800 year old bronze Roman Sesterius from the reign of Filippo the 1st (~250 AD)

I'm really an off and on coin collector. I go through phases where I really like collecting, and go and get some, and then long phases where I dont at all.

Anyway, I thought I'd do a post of one of my most favourite coins.

It is a Roman bronze Sesterius dating from around 250AD. Its from the reign of Emperor Filippo the 1st (Philip) who ruled from 244 to 249 AD.

Its a nice sized coin, and in incredible condition considering its age. I actually bought it while on honeymoon in Rome, back in 2006 !

The blue ticket above was with it when I bought it - I paid a decent amount for it at the time (120 Euros). I just wanted one with good age and condition - as a nice memoir of our honeymoon to Rome. The yellow ticket above is from when a friend looked into it for me around 5 years ago.

Its quite thick and heavy, coming in at 18.8g. If you had a few of these in your pocket, you'd know about it.

The front contains the inscription Felicitas Temp SC, which I understand means something along the lines of bestowing good luck and could apply to many things (eg, fertility, military, etc), with the figure being a representation of felicitas as a goddess.

A sestertius was a quarter of a denarius, meaning 'two and a half' asses - a roman coinage measurement, with a denarius equaling 10.

Whenever I look at it, I do wonder about its history - who had it before me, how many hands has it passed through, etc. Its a lovely looking coin - and I just thought it worthwhile sharing !
