Wednesday Walk - taking in some architecture in the city of Edinburgh
It was quite a nice day here in Edinburgh, so I took advantage and had a wander into the centre of town. I love architecture, and the city has some fantastic buildings, so I snapped what I liked as I went !
The first major building I hit was the Museum of Modern Art (above) - there are actually two of them, across the road from each other. We can take a short cut through the gardens here when walking into town !
This is the scroll detail on the walls in front of the gallery - I love it. And also in the background is one of the modern art installations - a set of lights that say 'There will be no miracles here' ! Quite !
We also passed the beautiful bronze above, when cutting through the gardens. Its called the Virgin of Alsace, dating form 1919-21 by Emile-Antoine Bourdelle. Its beautiful and I always stop to take it in.
Next up was St Mary's cathedral which is in the West End of the city centre - a fantastic, huge building. You can see its three spires from many places around the city.
Then it was the beautiful art deco building above. Its right on the corner of Princes St which is the main street in Edinburgh. It used to be a department store, but is now a Jonnie Walker whisky store ! Our biggest export - and the cause of many a sore head.
This pic above is also taken from the same corner on Princes street, and looks over towards two more churches with Edinburgh Castle in the background on the hill. These two characters are also art installations - a skeletal 'our wullie' - a famous Scottish comic strip character, and a fancy cow/bull !
Above is the Usher Hall, a concert venue. I love the pattern the clouds were making !
I then went down into Princes Street Gardens, where this church can be found - its quite pretty , and tucked away !
And above is the beautiful Victorian fountain which can be found in the gardens - its stunning.
I also love this sculpture that is in the gardens. Its actually quite sad as its a memorial for parents who have lost young children. Sad but and beautifully fitting memorial.
Next up (above) was the Scottish National Gallery - we stopped into see their impressionists collection - its free to enter any Scottish National Gallery, which is great.
The building above is another part of the National Gallery - with the building taking on an Egyptian Temple theme.
As we started heading for home we passed the building above, which I love. It reminds me of the campaniles in Venice.
And last but not least we passed this splendid building. It was actually a private school, but was recently sold and turned into luxury flats - which are very pricey !
Anyway, I hope you are all having a great Wednesday too - all the best form Scotland @hoosie !!!
