Finalizó el quinto major de la mejor manera (SPA-ENG)
Pese a que los majors o torneos mayores pertenecientes al Grand Slam son solamente cuatro, este torneo denominado The Players, es considerado por muchos como el siguiente en importancia a esos cuatro.
Y tuvo un final digno de un torneo mayor, con cuatro grandes jugadores disputando la punta hasta el último de los 72 hoyos programados. Como si eso no fuera suficiente aliciente para observar un final emocionante, uno de los cuatro que llegaron a ese último hoyo con posibilidades, podía ganar por segunda vez este importante torneo que curiosamente en 50 años jamás tuvo un ganador que repitiera.
Y así se dio, Scottie Scheffler, quien además es el jugador número uno del ranking mundial, repitió su victoria en este torneo agrandando su leyenda que apunta a convertirlo en la figura más importante en surgir en el circuito de la PGA luego de Tiger Woods, no es poca cosa y aunque quizás sea un poco temprano para semejante afirmación, por ahora su carrera marcha a toda máquina, solo tiene 27 años de edad y su futuro depende solo de sí mismo.
El último y definitivo día comenzó con el estadounidense Xander Schauffele como líder con -17, seguido a un golpe por otro norteamericano, Wyndham Clark. En el tercer lugar Brian Harman, también norteamericano estaba a dos golpes. Scheffler, se encontraba a 5 golpes del líder, debía jugar sin fallas y haciendo muchos birdies para descontar la ventaja, contaba a su favor con que Schauffele pese a ser un extraordinario jugador con siete victorias en el circuito, ha fallado repetidas veces en los últimos dos años en el cierre de algunos torneos que lo encontraban encaramado en las primeras posiciones el último día, Clark parecía un rival más de cuidado, venía de ganar un major, el US Open el año anterior y el AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM un mes atrás.
Pero nadie pudo con Scottie, con una extraordinaria vuelta de -8 terminó con un score de -20, faltando tres hoyos para finalizar le llevaba dos y tres golpes de ventaja a sus principales seguidores, en el hoyo 16, un par 5 de los más sencillos del campo todos ellos hicieron birdie y se acercaron a uno, a excepción de Clark que estaba en -18, en el hoyo 17 este último se acercó a 1 golpe al hacer birdie. Todo quedaba por resolverse en el último hoyo, que para agregar dramatismo es el más difícil de los 18 que componen la cancha, ninguno de ellos logró bajar el par y los tres empataron en el segundo lugar a uno del campeón.
Los latinoamericanos fueron pocos y con escasa suerte, de los 3 que se presentaron solo uno pasó el corte y ese fue Emiliano Grillo, mi compatriota. Los colombianos Nico Echavarría y Camilo Villegas quedaron afuera luego de las dos primeras jornadas. Grillo llegó al último día con la posibilidad de quedar entre los 10 primeros, estaba -7 al inicio de las acciones de este domingo, pero una mala actuación con +5 lo dejaron en el puesto 54 entre los 73 que participaron de las dos últimas jornadas.
Un gran torneo con una definición no apta para cardíacos, presagio quizás de una temporada maravillosa, se acerca la época de los majors y Scottie Scheffer apunta para quedarse con alguno de ellos.
The fifth major ended in the best way
Although the majors or major tournaments belonging to the Grand Slam are only four, this tournament called The Players is considered by many to be the tournament that is next in importance to those four.

The last and final day began with the American Xander Schauffele as the leader with -17, followed one stroke by another American, Wyndham Clark. Scheffler was 5 strokes behind the leader, had to play without mistakes, and made many birdies to reduce the advantage, he had in his favor that Schauffele, despite being an extraordinary player with seven victories on the circuit, had failed repeatedly in the last two years into the closing of some tournaments that found him perched in the top positions on the last day, Clark seemed like a more careful rival, he had just won a major, the US Open the previous year and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM one month back.
But no one could beat Scottie, with an extraordinary round of -8 he finished with a score of -20, with three holes left to finish he was two and three strokes ahead of his main followers, on the 16th hole, a par 5 of the most singles on the course, all of them made birdies and came within one, except for Clark who was at -18, on the 17th hole the latter came within 1 stroke by making birdie. Everything remained to be resolved on the last hole, which to add drama is the most difficult of the 18 that make up the course, none of them managed to lower par and the three tied for second place, one behind the champion.
The Latin Americans were few and unlucky, of the 3 that appeared, only one made the cut and that was Emiliano Grillo, my compatriot. Colombians Nico Echavarría and Camilo Villegas were left out after the first two days. Grillo arrived at the last day with the possibility of being among the top 10, he was -7 at the beginning of this Sunday's actions, but a poor performance with +5 left him in 54th place among the 73 who participated in the last two journeys.
