Night walk - Paseo nocturno

My wife and I are not night owls, never even in our younger years. It is not that we are boring, that we prefer activities in the sunlight and staying at home at night.

That taste for early hours does not mean that we have not gone out at night, only that it was not usual, only sporadic appearances under the stars, even on vacation in tourist sites.

Sometimes nights out are unavoidable and this happened this last weekend, when the visit of our lifelong friends for a few days broke into our lives, altering the routine. We went to the theater and at the end of the play, we began to walk in search of a restaurant for dinner.

In that walk for a few blocks we passed through Plaza Lavalle, a complex that occupies three blocks from the micro center of the city of Buenos Aires and that back in the 17th century was a vacant lot in whose center there was a lagoon formed by one of the streams that crossed at that time the incipient city of the enormous city in which it has become today.

This square is surrounded by several notable buildings, of great national heritage, some constructions with cultural objectives and others institutional; all of them beautiful exponents of classical architecture, most of them from the 19th century, including some older ones.

The Cervantes National Theater, located at one of its vertices, the internationally famous Teatro Colón, the Presidente Roca school, the Palace of Justice, the seat of the Supreme Court of the Nation, the Massue viewpoint, the Libertad temple, the main Synagogue of the Argentine Israelite Congregation and a large number of sculptures and monuments in honor of various personalities and events in the life of our nation.

Walking through there at night, seeing them illuminated so that their architectural qualities of extraordinary good taste stand out, even more, invites you to observe them carefully. It is a highly recommended motivating and revitalizing experience, not only for the occasional tourist but also for the inhabitants of the city, generally in a hurry and distracted, who pass through the area a thousand times without stopping for a few moments to admire them and think of a different, better country. A path that unfortunately we lost at some point.

Sometimes walks like this make me rethink if we might not be missing out on some unrepeatable experiences due to that ingrained habit of not going out at night. Although perhaps, just perhaps, sporadic walks have a flavor of discovery that makes them more attractive, exciting, and fun.
