Pesca, guanacos y pueblos originarios - Fishing, guanacos and native peoples

(Edited)

I thought a lot before publishing this story that it is absolutely real and relates events, sensations, and feelings that filled me with happiness at that time. The doubt about incorporating it into my blog today is that years ago I wrote and published a shorter version and, according to my own criticism, quite poorly written, which does not reflect everything I felt on that fishing trip, one of many that I have made throughout my life.

I have always maintained a line of conduct and have not published repeated or copied things from others. In any case, this new version of my writing is so different from the previous one and it represents the story so much better than I believe it is absolutely necessary to publish it, it is an obligation for myself, a recognition of a work that greatly improves what I wrote on that occasion. . With that being said, here it is.

Sunrises on the island are usually cloudy, windy, humid, and unpleasant. But when one of those perfect days appears, the exquisiteness of the environment to which is added the accompaniment of the weather overwhelms with its beauty, giving a sensation similar to that perceived when observing a work of incunabula art; indescribable, like something that allows us just for an instant to absorb the energy it radiates. As impressive as the environment in which the story is located.

The water of the lake is so calm that it looks like a smoky mirror, clarity slowly begins to dominate the scene, the sun is coming up and its coming heat already envelops the trees, shrubs, and flowers that bloom everywhere. The daytime fauna wakes up from its long night of lethargy and prepares for a brilliant day.

From the window of the shelter for campers, quite dilapidated and in need of a complete and urgent renovation, I manage to observe a small red fox walking with that jumping step that characterizes it, always with its head raised, its nose, eyes, and ears attentive. to any sign that allows it to locate any prey.

Guanacos are not seen for now, at least as far as I can see, I suspect that there should not be many left in this area, in the same way as Onas or Selknam, indigenous people belonging to one of the groups of the first settlers of southernmost Patagonia, known to many as the end of the world.

According to experts, it is a fait accompli that there is no longer a single survivor of that tribe that populated this region, also known as Tierra del Fuego, along with others in the centuries before the arrival of European colonization.

My wife has told me that she met an Ona woman who cleaned houses by the hour in the Villa Lugano neighborhood, that was what the woman herself told about her origins and provenance, she soon became a legend in the neighborhood, and many neighbors knew her as "the Ona". Whether it was true or not, we never knew.

The end of this tribe of indigenous people began in the early years of the 20th century, to be more precise, the decline in its population began slowly when the first conquerors arrived several centuries earlier and ended around this time closer to our days.

For some reason that is not fully clarified, they never get along, those who arrive with a spirit of conquest with those who were already installed in the place, it is part of the history of humanity, generally, those who arrive are adventurous, with a stronger character, in many warrior cases and in almost all occasions they know and master a superior technology; as a result, the original inhabitants are expelled and with some luck, lose part of their population and territory; complete and total annihilation is frequent in certain cases, for example in that of the Onas.

It is curious, in science fiction literature there are many books, some very famous that were made into movies and television, with the theme of alien invasions where humanity must fight against the usually heartless invader from other worlds who wants to destroy us with their superior technology and knowledge, these references are the only ones I know of where the invaded, in this case, human beings, resist and emerge victorious.

These works recount a generally futuristic fiction, do the facts change because the authors cannot escape the self-preservation instinct, or is it the guilty conscience that forces us to write stories that contradict logic and examples of past times and that occurred among ourselves?

The surface of the lake raises volutes of steam and from time to time a series of concentric rings are observed in the water, they are fish feeding on some insect that I cannot distinguish. As well as trout, there are many animal species introduced to the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, the gray fox, the very harmful beaver, the mink, and some varieties of rats, are just a few examples; It is known that on the Isla de Los Estados, there are many red deer, in fact, it is recognized as a pest both in these places and in other parts of Patagonia. Like most exotic animals, they do not have natural enemies like in the northern hemisphere, so they reproduce practically uncontrollably.

I know a lot about the introduction of trout, they brought eggs of various varieties between 1903 and 1904 and released them into rivers and lakes in the vicinity of the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, within the Nahuel Huapi National Park, with the passage of time nature He did his job and today we find rainbows, browns, fontinalis, locked salmon and other salmonids scattered throughout all the rivers and lakes of Patagonia, the Cuyo area and even in the province of Buenos Aires, also in Tierra del Fuego, more a thousand kilometers south of its original release site.

This experiment with salmonids was quite beneficial for the economy of the entire region, it generates significant income from tourism, and many fishermen, mainly North Americans and Europeans, are attracted by the wild varieties of salmonids that inhabit our waters. From another point of view, it was not at all benign for some varieties of native fish that succumbed to the voracity of foreigners, curiously with an enormous similarity to what happened with the Onas.

In addition to the Onas, other indigenous groups lived (a few still remain) scattered throughout the islands and channels of Tierra del Fuego, mainly the Yaganes, the Alacalufes, and the Haush. Of all of them, the most picturesque was the Yagan people, they practically lived on canoes, and they were the most dependent on the sea and fishing, unlike the Onas who hated and feared the water. All of them were extremely primitive peoples who did not know how to write, therefore they only lived in the present, they did not remember past events except by word of mouth and the future did not worry them in the least, they were peaceful people, in general, they were nomads and virtually no history.

While my mind wandered frantically through all these stories, a slight movement at the edge of the forest caught my attention, a small group of guanacos peeked out timidly, as if waiting to see signs that would warn them of some danger. According to what I know, they have not been hunted for many years, mainly since there are no more aborigines in the area, the guanaco was one of their main sources of food; it seems that the collective memory and the sense of survival still remain very present in their instinct and leads them to be extremely cautious.

A good amount of time passed until the head of the pack was encouraged to leave the shelter of the thicket completely and cautiously went to the shore of the lake, and began to drink the refreshing, pure, and crystalline water that is only found in those lakes. formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. The rest of the pack rushed to follow and imitate him. It was an extraordinary spectacle performed only for me.

I remembered the red fox, I looked for it intensely, but it had disappeared, anyway, its small build and its habit of hunting alone make it a non-existent enemy for the size and strength of the guanacos.

The guanacos and the Onas of the large island of Tierra del Fuego had a similar fate, the huge ranches that were installed for raising sheep and the production of wool contributed substantially to the fateful consequences of both cases, there were too many guanacos that ate the pasture destined for the herds, the ranchers also had to frequently replace the wire fences that the chulengos insisted on knocking down; Something similar happened with the indigenous people, there were many of them, they were generally hungry and the owners of the establishments feared that their sheep would be stolen and eaten, the end of the story is easy to imagine.

After drinking a steaming freshly brewed coffee that seemed like an elixir for the palate and literally devouring in a few minutes some toasted bread spread with butter and sweet elderberry, I slowly dressed in my fisherman's clothing, leaving my thoughts about the sea for another moment. destination of the ancient inhabitants of the Big Island and I concentrated on the fishing that was coming, I had a spectacular day ahead of me that invited me to be grateful for being alive and enjoy a day that promised to be the best, mainly by observing the great number of concentric rings left by trout when feeding.

Before leaving for the lakeside, I took from my waistcoat a hip flask filled with the good single malt whiskey I always carry with me, poured a small amount into my battered old aluminum mug, and toasted alone to the day I ahead, for the memory of the Onas and of course, for the beautiful and peaceful guanacos.
