El monstruo que ríe. / The Laughing Monster. [Esp]/[Eng]

No sabía bien qué esperar.

I've been hanging around #Scrobble.life for days, reading what people share, seeing how they connect movies, songs, and memories. Today I've decided to post for the first time. And I can't think of a better way to start than by talking about a reunion that left me with a strange smile and a slight tightness in my chest.
A few days ago, while organizing my collection, I noticed a gap that struck me: for years, the only thing I’d kept by Roberto Benigni was Life Is Beautiful. A beautiful film, yes, but with such restrained tenderness that I sometimes found it distant. On pure instinct, I went back through his filmography and settled on Il Mostro (1994). I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. When it ended, I sat in silence for quite a while. I’d just watched something that blends the most absurd laughter with a discomfort that’s hard to explain.
It’s not a movie that sets out to please everyone. The very first scene is pure chaos: misunderstandings, exaggerated gestures, and an unbridled Benigni playing Loris, an ordinary man whom the police mistake for a serial killer. The plot moves along in fits and starts, but if you let yourself get carried away, you’ll find much more than just a comedy of errors.

The Monster Within Us
The premise is simple. A series of crimes rocks an Italian city, and through a string of absurd coincidences, all suspicion falls on Loris. No one stops to think. The evidence is ridiculous, but it fits perfectly with the collective panic. What drew me in wasn’t the mystery, but how the film shows that the real monster isn’t the person being accused, but rather the mistrust, sensationalism, and hypocrisy of those around him.
Benigni doesn’t just act—he co-wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film with Yves Boisset. There’s something artisanal about that physical humor, with echoes of silent film filtered through a very Italian lens, almost like commedia dell’arte. The situations are so absurd that you laugh, but right in the middle of your laughter, an uncomfortable question arises: How often do we judge without knowing the facts?

The Scene I Can’t Get Out of My Head
There’s a moment that still haunts me. Loris, cornered, tries to explain his innocence to a neighbor. He’s holding a frying pan and gesturing so wildly that everything comes across the wrong way. The comic and the tragic collide without warning. It left me with a frozen smile—the kind that hurts a little because you know you’re seeing a truth disguised as a joke.
I don’t want to offer an academic analysis. I’ll just say that few comedies have made me feel so vulnerable. Maybe it’s because Loris isn’t a hero: he’s clumsy, skittish—someone trying to hold on to his routine while everything is falling apart. In a way, he could be any one of us.

A Playful and Rebellious Film
Compared to Life Is Beautiful, Il Mostro seems like it’s from another galaxy. There are no history lessons or grand speeches; there’s a body stumbling about, dialogue that runs amok, and a storytelling style that isn’t afraid of looking ridiculous. That made me think about how versatile Benigni is as a creator, capable of shifting from the most restrained drama to the wildest farce without losing authenticity.
For years, I thought his films were only meant to move you to tears. This movie showed me that he also knows how to make you laugh from the gut and, at the same time, stir up something uncomfortable.
Now I wonder if I shouldn’t go back to those filmographies I take for granted and dig a little deeper beyond the obvious success. ¨Il Mostro¨ isn’t perfect; it has scenes that feel out of place today and choices that some might dismiss as simplistic. But it gave me something I didn’t expect: the feeling of rediscovering an artist just when I thought I’d pigeonholed him.
