Traditional Houses on the island of Sulawesi

Thank you Indonesia Hive Community. Houses have always held a crucial role in human life. The civilization of various ethnic groups in Indonesia varies. The shapes and stylish of houses across various ethnic group have become cultural hallmarks.

Sulawesi island has several Provinces on of which is South Sulawesi. Traditional Houses in South Sulawesi vary in shape, with distinctly local characteristics, such as those typical of the Bugis, Toraja and so on.

Traditional Bugis House
Remember Bugis, remember maritime traditions. That's what one tribe in South Sulawesi is known for. The traditional Bugis house consists of three levels, Rakkeang(attic) Ale bola(body of the house) and Awa bola(underfloor).

The center of these three parts is the *posi bola"(center of the house) which is considered a sacred place, where the central pillar of the house is places. The Bugis tribe's dwelling typology is a rectangular stilt house divided into three parts. The roof of the Bugis house is saddle shaped and has triangular covers on the front and back.

Timpa laja the name of the isosceles triangular cover, functions as ventilation, lighting or as a barrier against birds that Will eat the rice in the Rakkeang (attic). From the level of the arrangement, the status of the occupant can be determined.

Toraja traditional house
Toraja traditional houses are no less unique than other regions. Such as the curved roof shape resembling an inverted boat, or like buffalo horns. All Toraja traditional houses face north. The space under the houses is still often used as a buffalo pen.

The number of pillars installed on the front of the house Will support the roof. The order is 29,27,25,and 23 depending on the social status of the owner. The rice barn is built facing the front of the house,with a shape almost similar to the main house, only with fewer pillar (4-6).

Building materials from local typical wood, the connection is carried out using a tie system (rattan) and clamped, traditional roofs are Made of bamboo. Toraja geometric carvings and decoration are famous for their distinctive motifs.

Ornaments inspired by plants, there are also motifs derived from animals such as buffalo, roosters, which have a certain role in the lifestyle of the Torajan people. Traditional buildings, whatever their form, are a manifestation of the values embraced and maintained within their communities. People can learn about the historical background, culture and mindset of the people who created and used them, the house is themselves.
