Highest Border Crossing In The World

Are you a mountain lover? If yes, you're going to love this post. Pakistan has a lot of mountain ranges in the north. The Himalayas, The Hindu Kush and the The Karakorum. But, what makes the Karakorum range so important? Well, in this range lies the border between Pakistan and China. It is the highest border in the whole world which is at al altitude of 16,200 ft. Isn't that breathtaking to only know that? Imagine what would it feel like to actually go and visit that place?

I visited the Khunjerab pass this summer as it is the only time you can visit. The Khunjerab Pass closes from November to May for visitors due to extreme winters, snowfall and unbearable conditions. The Khunjerab Pass joins the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan with the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

I visited this place with my fellow dentists for a mission. We had set up a free dental camp in the peripheral areas of Pakistan and provided free dental checkups, free medicines and free OPDs with an aim of motivating people to keep a better check of their oral health. I'll be posting about that camp real soon as well.

Anyway, the journey for Khunjerab was a one to remember, we had booked two buses to reach there and had to leave early morning as the light goes out in the ranges as early as 4 pm.

It was a pleasant journey especially for a city guy like me who doesn't get to see such beauty and nature everyday. Everything felt calm and soothing. The wind, the sunlight, the rain, the rivers, the animals, in short everything. I felt I was a bit closer to God in that area. I realized what we all have been missing out on living in big cities chasing after money and peace when in reality peace is with the nature.

It took us four hours to reach the Khunjerab pass. As we moved upwards I got really hard to breath and when we reached the Khunjerab Pass, I saw a warming there for visitors. The warning stated to not stay for more than 20 minutes at that place in winters as the oxygen saturation goes really low here. This was true as I had to use my inhaler a couple of times while I was there. Even in summers, the oxygen wasn't sufficient due to the altitude. I wonder how come the locals live their.

Since we were with an organization, called PADS Pakistan Association of Dental Students we decided to uphold our poster for a group photo. Surprisingly there was a new channel crew over there as well and they wanted to interview us for their news segment. The president of our association gave them the interview while we sat in the background.

Now, I want to show you all the mesmerizing beautiful view at the Khunjerab pass. Honestly, I hadn't seen a place more beautiful as this.

It was a fun journey, I had to move at a good pace in order to have a breath of air. The air was kind of dry over there with extreme cold even in the summers. The guards over there had a cloth wrapped around their faces and it was prohibited to take pictures with them. I wonder why..

World's Highest ATM machine

You visit a place and you miss out on a landmark that is the only one in the world? Not a chance. The National Bank of Pakistan has built the World's Highest ATM machine at the Khunjerab Pass which is fully functional.
