Greetings, dear friends at Holos&Lotus. Today I’m joining the discussion started by
@damarysvibra What am I doing for my health?|| What am I doing to stay healthy?. I’ve been a bit absent from the community, but today when I took a look, I came across this initiative and immediately thought to myself, “I have to participate.”
Health is a great treasure; everything we can do in life depends on it. “If we have health, we have everything,” “health is very important”—that’s what my father used to say, even though he suffered from two illnesses for many years. Even so, he led a “normal” life and tirelessly sought a cure for his condition, or at least a way to minimize it. I didn’t understand; I was just a child when I heard him say it, but now I know how important health is. It’s a holistic concept—we can’t just focus on the physical; everything is interconnected, and there must be a balance between emotions, mind, and spirit. If we don’t have physical ailments but our emotions are affected, it will impact our bodies; we’ll look sad and tired, and not only that, but our bodies will start to suffer. The production of substances like cortisol, combined with stress, can trigger illnesses, some of which are irreversible. It’s also possible that our faith may be shaken, leading to a negative impact on our thoughts.

How we feel is how we look—it seems incredible, but it’s true: what’s inside is outside, and vice versa. For me, health is paramount in my life; I never miss my annual checkups, despite the tough economic times we’re facing. Last year I couldn’t go to the doctor; certain circumstances prevented me from saving up the necessary amount to cover my routine medical care. This year, thankfully, I was able to do so, and it was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders—it’s a commitment I’ve made to myself. Fortunately, everything went well, and I’ve followed my doctor’s instructions. That’s been a positive aspect; however, on the negative side, I can mention that for a long time I had an unhealthy diet and a sedentary lifestyle. As for my emotions, I struggled to heal from certain things; all that turmoil was reflected in my body and also in my thoughts.
I knew I had to stop, but I didn’t. I kept telling myself, “tomorrow,” and the days just went by. However, things don’t happen by chance, and I started an exercise routine thanks to a friend. That led me to change my diet; I left behind processed foods, carbohydrates, and fats. Before giving up my sedentary lifestyle and poor diet, I sought professional help to combat depression. I must confess that I had to put in a lot of effort and change my attitude.

For the sake of my health, I haven’t just focused on getting out of a difficult situation temporarily—I’ve maintained that progress, and it doesn’t stop there. I’ve gradually incorporated other activities, such as gardening and attending small group meetings to listen to Christian sermons, though not always. Currently, I continue with my exercise routine (it’s been 8 months now), healthy eating, my routine medical checkups, and I take care of my environment—both my physical surroundings and the social circles I interact with. Yes, well-being and quality of life are important for keeping emotions in balance and feeling at peace. For example, hot flashes during menopause led me to invest in better ventilation for my bedroom. I work 8 hours a day, I exercise, but I also make time to be a homemaker and take care of my pets.
The environment in which we live is also important; the people we surround ourselves with influence our emotions, and this affects both our mind and body. We have the ability to sense whether there is negativity in our relationships with others and, based on that, make decisions—such as distancing ourselves.

Health is holistic, and as such, it must be approached not in isolation, but as a whole that complements us in pursuit of our well-being and quality of life.
