Currently Wesley So is competing in the American Cup, an eight player double elimination format which started on March 12.

In the first game, Sevian won win the black pieces as he sacrificed the exchange to attack Wesley's kingside. The second game is crucial since Wesley cannot afford to be down 2-0 in the match giving him undue pressure.

Let's review the game. 😀

  1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Sevian is not afraid of Wesley's expertise in the Italian opening which he released a tutorial on 6 years ago.

'3. ...Nf6 4. d3 Bc5 5. c3 O-O 6. O-O d6 7. Re1 a5 it's funny that this move is not even a top move in Chessbase's 2011 powerbook but now it's the first or second choice. Wesley even included this quick a5 move in his tutorial.

On the other hand, the f5 square is a natural home for the White Knight in the Italian aimiing for Black's kingside.
