Homecooked Veggies & AH CHING Coffee Shop || Hometown Sibu Trip Journal

It was heavy downpour morning and parents decided to not bring us out because of younger children. They did not prefer children getting wet or exposed to cold. So dad went out in the morning to have his own time to sip coffee while at the same time, after that he could pack food for us, for our early lunch. There was this famous 'nasi lemak' stall nearby the house, and their 'beef rendang' was highly recommended. Went late, then you might need to come another day. That was the reason also my dad decided to go out earlier so that he could place order first.

Nasi Lemak & Beef Rendang

This was our simple yet delicious lunch on a cold day at my hometown, at the comfort of my home with the presence of parents. I felt so blessed. Life had never been so free and easy until I was at hometown. Haha. I just woke up and miraculously, everyone was done. So I relaxed and watched TV, something I had not done for years. Lol...

Nasi Lemak⤵️

The 'nasi lemak' was rice fragrantly cooked using coconut milk, with 'Pandan' leaves, and onions. Some salt too. I could eat the rice on its own. Dad added a fried egg for each of us. The 'sambal', aka chilli sauce was packed separately and individually. As you could tell, 'nasi lemak' was served with slices of cucumbers, roasted peanuts and fried anchovies.

Beef Rendang⤵️

The beef rendang was so popular, my dad said there were long queue. By the time reached my dad's turn, left little bit only. I ate it and I knew why. The rendang was so properly spiced up, cooked perfectly on coconut milk too, well stewed because the meat was so soft. Tasted so good.

My mum's homecooked mixed vegetables

This was superb too till my boys complimented that grandmother was the best chef ever. Haha. They loved the vegetables more than the beef. So I got to eat more beef too. Lol. My mum added broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, enoki and black fungus. Homecooked food always the best. Yums!

In between

Before dinner, we just lazed around at home. Dad showed the boys our old old organ. He still played it.

Then, Jansen wanted to play with the exercise machine called Shake It Off. But I was wondering did he have anymore fat to be shaken off? Lol

Dinner at Ah Ching Kopitiam (Coffee shop)

We supposed to feast on crab but the Famous Crab Restaurant was jam packed with people and still were many people standing at the side to wait for their turn. So, we skipped. While driving around the town to decide, then it suddenly rained again. Oh no.....

So, dad just stopped at the nearest coffee shop called Ah Ching Kopitiam for dinner. Sibu is full of this type of coffee shops with a lot of stalls, usually quite packed too due to cheaper food.

I took the below photo from where our car was parked. It was raining, so you see, my angle and capturing... Bad. Bad. Hope you don't mind.

It was a coffee shop than span from one corner lot to another corner lot, so they used the in-between section for tables and chairs too, as well as the walking aisle.

We finally got a table at the walking aisle, still dirty, I used my tissue and wet wipes to clean the table.

Food we ordered

Grilled Fish⤵️

Dad said their grilled fish was nice, so he ordered for hs. The stall looked like this, you could choose your fresh fish.

Indeed, the fish was so fresh, perfectly cooked, and super yummy chilli sauce on top. My husband loved this type of grilled fish.

Kampua ⤵️

This was the famous Sibu noodle, we call it 'Kampua'. Simple egg noodle in fragrant pork lard oil with onion oil with soy sauce or without soy sauce. We ordered both the soy sauce type and without soy sauce type. Really delicious. My youngest son ate so much.

Carrot cake⤵️

My mum ordered this for us although my dad said this stall did not fry it well. He was right. The carrot cake was not done properly, abit too soft and lumpy on certain part. However, we did not mind and still finished all. The stall and food looked like this.

img_0.3556592101683596

Okay, so here's the trick. Carrot cake has no carrots at all, when I say this, meaning no red carrot at all. The orange one. This carrot cake is made of rice flour and radish. Then why called carrot cake? Because in Mandarin, radish is called 白萝卜, white carrot. Hence, the carrot cake. The frying style was done well, only the carrot cake must had been added too much water, making it mushy.

Classic burger⤵️

My eldest son ordered burger. He couldn't skip burger although my dad said the burgers here not nice. Oh well, he still wanted to try. It was alright to him.

Sometimes, it was not about the food whether tasty or not, it was the people we ate together, the loved ones who accompanied us to hunt for food to eat. The precious moments together as we ate and chitchatted. After finished our food, it was still heavy downpour, oh well, my parents said, we brought the rain from West Malaysia to East Malaysia. Before we arrived Sibu, Sibu was hot and no rain.

Thank you for reading. Stay bubbly. Stay hopeful.
