Respiratory Function Test || Lung Test | 1st time

It was another hospital appointment for our little champion, Jansen. His respiratory doctor, Professor Anna thought it was good to schedule him a lung test appointment to see how his lungs performed so far. Although, she did say it may be too early for him, but who know, never try never know.

So, here we were at Hospital University Malaya

Why the university? Because it is also a hospital which thousands of doctors are being trained each year. Let me show you our favourite spot at the hospital. The park in between the Children's Department and South Department (where all tests, X-ray and other procedures are done).

This is the place we frequent most during the son's 4-month hospital stay after birth. My husband and I would sit here waiting for results of surgery and various prcocedures or in between visitation, to gather our thoughts, to pray, to be brave again to brace the storms. A place full of greeneries to calm the soul.

We would pass this park whenever we walked from Children's Ward to do x-ray.

But, as for this blog, it was for lung test. Walk, walk, walk... All the aisle...we used to be accompanied by one doctors and two nurses when he was a newborn, with all tubes and machines attached to him, they escorted us. But for this time, thank God, it was just us, meaning Jansen boy had beat the odds.

Oh, I haven't showed you the entrance where the husband stopped us at, since he could not accompany us to limit the number of people, so he dropped us at the entrance.

Once I reached at South Tower, I was busy with registration, so on and so forth, therefore not many photos taken. Let's just showed you where we were at Level 7, Cardiologi Unit where ECG test is, and stress test as well as the lung test.

Waiting Room

Here we were at the waiting room. Jansen was all nervous, so was I, because it was our first time doing this.

Half an hour of waiting, so I walked to the posters at the wall and read the information. Love to read stuff like this.

Jansen Zephaniah Wong

Someone came and called his name out and loud. He got even more nervous. The person led us to another room and we saw this. I could tell Jansen was trying to calm down by saying "Cool instruments."

He was asked to sit down right in front of an instrument.

He was supposed to blow via his mouth into this piece of thing several time to measure his lungs' volume. It was challenging for him because he never really know how to blow hard, mainly due to his underdeveloped lungs. I stopped taking photos because he needed me to hold his hands when the doctor needed to close his nostrils with a tool, while he followed the instructions of...

  • breathe like normal
  • ready
  • inhale reallll deep
  • blow out as hard and as long as you can.. Then
  • back to inhale

But, before the doctor asked him to "back to inhale", his blow was never hard enough to reach a certain threshold to enable the machine to count stuff, so we did this cycle for 10 times. It was so tiring for Jansen.

Next up, he was supposed to repeat the above but with 'pumps of oxygen' pump into his mouth. He was shocked by the sound plus the pressure put into his mouth, he got nervous and couldn't synchronised with doctor's instructions and..

he cried... Such poor thing...

He mentioned to me the accumulation of oxygen in his mouth before he could inhale etc make him suffocated and hard to breathe. I couldn't understand. But, just tried to comfort him.

The doctor explained although it wasn't a successful procedure, but Jansen had tried his best, and it really wasn't easy to do this at young age. Perhaps, Jansen can do it again when he is 10 years old.

We walked back to the Children's Department, passed by the park and bought some egg tarts and croissant from a bakery shop as our comfort food.

Forty minutes drive back home, just in time to pick our eldest son. Look how happy Jansen was when he got to see his big brother. Back to his usual mischief.

Let me end this blog by showing you our lunch at this huge cafeteria. 😁

I think Jansen was to young for that test I have done it as an adult and it’s not easy as an adult
That’s a beautiful park to be able to wait in and stay composed

Jansen is doing amazingly well

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

I am relieved to know for the fact that it is also not easy for adult to go through the test. He really tried his very best.

Thank you so much, @tattoodjay. I will tell him again that he is doing amazing.

I think I've gone through similar test when I go for my medical check up at SMC.
It's really hard even for an adult.. especially when one is a smoker :(
My heart goes out to your son & yourself.
Good thing is Jansen has you with him. stay strong

Thank you so much, @ireenchew. When it comes from people who experienced it before, it is a relief to know. I shall let Jansen knows so that he won't feel like he didn't do good enough.
