At my recent trip to Sibu, my hometown, I got to walk down memory lane by visiting one of the tourist spots here. When I was young, I used to come here with my parents and eldest sister for a night walk after dinner. And every Chinese New Year, we would surely come too to participate the Chinese New Year event held here. Since my husband and my sons were with me during this trip, I invited them to visit this place which I have a very fond memory on.

Sibu Rejang Esplanade

📍31, Jalan Maju, Pekan Sibu, 96000 Sibu, Sarawak.

I found out from Google search that it was built in the year 1988, the year it became the talk of this small town. Ever since its opening, it was crowded morning till night. It was no doubt a good hanging spot for family, couples, a breezy walk, a chillax day, and some even did fishing here.

The Rejang Esplanade is an attractively landscaped waterfront promenade that stretches from the Express Boat Passenger Terminal to the Kingwood Hotel, and includes the Hii’s Association Playground. Courting couples, anglers, al-fresco diners and sightseers flock here every evening to enjoy the riverfront scenery and view the Swan Statue, the emblem of Sibu. It is built in 1988 and it faces the Sungai Rajang (Rajang River). ~ source: https://chinese.sarawaktourism.com/attraction/rejang-esplanade/

Red bridge and Gazebo

We were greeted by a beautiful red bridge and a red gazebo. And alot of greeneries too. The sons found some acorns and busy collecting them. Looks like these city kids really needed to get out more to the forest. We walked across the bridge to be greeted by mighty Rejang River.

We then walk alongside the pathway overlooking the whole stretch to Rejang River. The sons asked, "How come the river so dirty like milk tea?"😂

We can see boats and people do come here at the terminal for boat ride to get across to another smaller town at the other side.

Rejang River is Malaysia's longest river, more than 770km, and I am proud that Sibu town is actually a popular connecting point between few towns across the river.

Playground

There is a small playground too and apparently, it was refurbished because everything looks different from what I remembered from my memory. Thankful for good maintenance to reserve the beauty of this place.

I really love the serenity here. Those gigantic trees serve their purpose of safe shelter and refuge.

We were greeted by beautiful Swan Statue, which is the symbol of Sibu Town. Swan is a graceful animal and is also an ancient Chinese symbol of prosperity and health. It is believed that long time ago, a starving swan was fed by community at Sibu despite they themselves being poor. In return, the bird taught them how to extract starch from wild sago, which then became a huge profitable business.

Nearby the Swan Statue, people were doing fishing and one of them caught a fish. My son commented, "Wow, the fish here must be strong to live in brown water." 😂

How I know the above? I read the information from one of the marble stone there. 😁

Ark Cafe

There is a popular Ark Cafe nearby the esplanade. Usually, people would dine here, thereafter had a good wind down at the park. Unfortunately, I heard from my friends that the business is not doing good after the pandemic and not sure how long will it last.

It was a super relaxing cool breezy evening walk for four of us. I was surprised that my sons love Sibu Town despite the not-many-nice malls here and no high rise buildings. They said it is peaceful here and people are closely knitted together. Wow!

Thank you for walking with me at Sibu Rejang Esplanade. Thank you, @tattoodjay for #WednesdayWalk community, that we get to see all the walks at different part of the world. Thank you, @elizacheng for #makemesmile community for us to make people smile and our own self smile too.
