Today, it is my pleasure to invite you to discover, study and learn about the diverse collections of Cuban flora and fauna. You will encounter a spectacular treasure of Caribbean vertebrates, invertebrates, and mammals, along with a brief museographic tour emphasizing the need to preserve our natural riches—all at the National Museum of Natural History of Cuba.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a conocer, estudiar y aprender un poco sobre diversas colecciones de la flora y fauna cubana. Conocerán un tesoro espectacular en vertebrados, invertebrados y mamíferos caribeños, además de un breve recorrido museográfico haciendo hincapié en la necesidad de preservar las riquezas naturales, todo en el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural de Cuba.

To begin, I always love this natural setting of the central park—completely green and well-kept—which leads to the main entrance of the center.

The National Museum of Natural History is located in the historic center of Old Havana, at 61 Obispo Street, corner of Oficios. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and a guide is available to explain the exhibition halls.

Para comenzar, siempre adoro este ambiente natural del parque céntrico, totalmente verde y bien cuidado, que da paso a la puerta principal del centro.

El Museo Nacional de Historia Natural está ubicado en el casco histórico de La Habana Vieja, en Obispo #61 Esquina de Oficios, con horarios de apertura de martes a Domingos y un guía que les explica las salas expositivas.

Inside the tour, you can see chronological panels explaining the geological eras, with replicas of dinosaur stories, including a large-scale model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex donated by a museum institute from New York.

The first floor also features a human evolution display with replicas of skulls from different eras and regions around the world. As I climbed the stairs, I noticed several sculptural portraits of scientific figures linked to the study of life and the Earth.

En el recorrido interno, se observan paneles cronológicos que explican las eras geológicas, con réplicas de historias de Dinosaurios, con una muestra de gran tamaño del Tyranosaurus Rex, donada por el Instituto museológico de New York.

También la primera planta, cuenta con un esquema de evolución humana con réplicas de cráneos, en distintas épocas y regiones del mundo. Al subir las escaleras noté que habían varios cuadros escultóricos de personalidades científicas vinculadas al estudio de la vida y la Tierra.

The first impression upon reaching the second floor is the model of a Cuvier's beaked whale specimen that stranded on the Havana coastline along the Malecón in the 1980s—a significant discovery for the nation.

Among other large-scale exhibits is the Sperm Whale skull. This species can reach lengths of up to 24 meters and possesses teeth only in its lower jaw.

La primera impresión del segundo piso, es la maqueta de un ejemplar de Ballena Picuda de Cuvier que encalló en el litoral de la Habana por el Malecón en la década de los 80, un gran hallazgo para la nación.

Entre otros objetos expositivos de gran magnitud está el Cráneo de Cachalote, especie que puede alcanzar los 24 metros de longitud y posee dientes solo en el maxilar inferior.

The next room is dedicated to the different types of bats on the island. With its 27 living species, Cuba has the greatest diversity of bats in the Antilles.

Despite being creatures that people often dislike due to their appearance, bats rank among the world's most important animals for their multifaceted environmental services—acting as pollinators and producing guano as fertilizer. The exhibit features the largest bat in Cuba and the second largest in all of the Americas.

La siguiente sala es dedicada a los distintos tipos de Murciélagos en la isla. Sus 27 especies vivientes hacen que Cuba tenga la mayor diversidad de murciélagos de Las Antillas.

Que a pesar de ser, criaturas que las personas desprecian por su apariencia, figuran entre los animales más importantes del mundo por sus multifacéticos servicios ambientales, agentes polinizadores y creación de guano como fertilizantes. En la muestra se encuentra el más grande de Cuba y segundo en tamaño de toda América.

Endemic birds that inhabit the country's forests are represented, including some with marvelous colors such as the Tocororo—the national bird—and the Parrot, which is kept as a pet in some households due to its ability to talk and communicate with people.

Also among the endangered or threatened populations are the Jabado and Churroso Woodpeckers, which live in open forests and savannas with abundant palms.

Se representan aves endémicas que habitan en los bosques del país, donde se exponen algunas de colores maravillosos como el Tocororo el ave nacional, la Cotorra que se manifiesta como mascota de algunos hogares, por su habilidad al hablar y comunicarse con las personas.

Otra de las poblaciones en peligro de extinción o amenazadas, son los Carpinteros Jabado y Churroso, que habitan en bosques abiertos y sabanas con abundancia de palmas.

Other faunal jewels include the Hawksbill turtles, marine turtles that are very tender and affectionate, inhabiting our oceans.

Also, the Almiquí, a small animal that is now rarely seen; it is found only in the northeastern region of Cuba. This creature typically feeds on vegetation, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. Another emblematic species is the Cuban crocodile, a key attraction in zoos due to its distinctive and limited traits.

Otras joyas faunísticas son los Carey, tortugas marítimas, muy tiernas y cariñosas que rodean nuestros océanos.

Además el Almiquí un animalito que ya casi no se aprecia; solo en la zona norte oriental cubana. La criatura suele alimentarse de vegetales, invertebrados y vertebrados pequeños. Otro insignia es el Cocodrilo Cubano una especie fundamental de los zoológicos, por sus rasgos característicos y limitados.

These varied exhibition halls with wooden and glass display cases also present a rich ecosystem of aquatic vertebrates, among them the Manjuarí, now almost uninhabitable due to pollution and the introduction of foreign fish.

Marine bony fish are exhibited, so named because they have skeletal bones. Among them are the Goldfish, Creole Snapper, and Butterflyfish, all threatened by uncontrolled fishing, whether for commercial or sport purposes.

Estas variadas salas expositiva con vitrinas de madera y cristal, presentan también un rico ecosistema vertebrados del agua, de ellos el Manjuarí ya casi inhabitable por la contaminación y la introducción de peces foráneos.

Se exhiben peces óseos marinos, nombrados así, por poseer sus esqueletos de huesos. Entre ellos el pez Dorado, Pargo Criollo, Mariposa, todos amenazados por la pesca descontrolada, de forma natural o deportiva.

Another marine species in danger are the coral reefs and their abundant hives. All due to degradation and pollution caused by humans themselves.

Every time I vacation at the beach, it is beautiful to enjoy these reefs and the populations of various fish in the sea—only to let them die by our own hands.

Otra de las especies marítimas que se encuentran en peligro son los arrecifes de coral y sus abundantes colmenas. Todo por la degradación y contaminación del mismo ser humano.

Cada vez que vacacionó a la playa, es hermoso disfrutar de estos arrecifes y la población de distintos peces en el mar, para dejarlos morir por nuestras propias manos.

The most beautiful collections of Snails, Shells, and Conchs found on the island are on display. Some, like the Queen Conch, are located in sandy seabeds or seagrass meadows throughout the archipelago, and—interestingly—they feed on sea urchins.

Other snails commonly found on our beaches are Olives and Porcelain snails. These are carnivorous animals that devour sponges, mollusk, eggs, and more.

Están expuestas las colecciones más bellas de Caracoles, Conchas y Cobos que se encuentran en la isla, algunos como Quinconte ubicado en los fondos arenosos o hierbas marinas alrededor de todo el archipiélago y lo bueno es que se alimenta de erizos de mar.

Otro de los caracoles más comunes en nuestras playas son los Olivas y Porcelana, son animales carnívoros, que destrozan esponjas, huevos, moluscos, etc.

It contains the largest color collection of a great number of butterflies found in the wild spaces of Cuba, both males and females.

The knowledge is spectacular—an experience that stands out due to its overall conservation care. Among them are the known diurnal butterflies; in the country there are 186 species, 67 of which are endemic to Cuba. Among the latter is "Parides gundlachianus", considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

Contiene la mayor colección a color de un gran número de mariposas que se encuentran en los espacios silvestres de Cuba, tanto machos o hembras.

El conocimiento es espectacular, una experiencia que se desataca por el cuidado de conservación general, existen las conocidas mariposas diurnas, donde en el país existen 186 especies, de ellas 67 son endémicas de Cuba, entre las últimas Parides Gundiachianus, considerada una de las más bellas del mundo.

This final area is organized for echinoderms and crustaceans, which also have their essential space in the museum. These animals, belonging to the arthropod group, inhabit marine and freshwater environments.

Among the most abundant on the island are crabs, lobsters, sea cockroaches, and other microscopic species. Although most of them serve as a food source for fish.

Esta zona final, viene organizada para los equinodermos y crustáceos que también tienen su espacio esencial en el museo. Estos animales pertenecientes al grupo de antrópodos, pertenecen al ambiente marino y aguas dulces.

Entre los que más abundan en la isla, están los cangrejos, langostas, cucarachas de mar y otras especies microscópicas. Aunque la mayoría son fuentes de alimentación de peces.

As we reach the final part of the tour, there is an exclusive exhibition for land snails, the "Viana" genus, which is often compared to the Polymitas from eastern Cuba—unique in the world.

Another is the "king of the heights", known as "Ligus"; these are rather large mollusks. As you can see, they are very beautiful and eye-catching due to the red and yellow colors of their shells—truly original.

Llegando a la parte final del recorrido, esta la exposición exclusiva para los caracoles terrestres, el género Viana que se suele comparar con las polimitas del oriente de cuba que son únicas del mundo.

Otro es los reyes de las alturas, nombrados Ligus, que son moluscos más bien grandes, como pueden observar son bien bonitos y llamativos por sus colores en el caparazón rojos, amarillos, bien originales.

At the end, the replica of the Cuban ground sloth—the largest terrestrial mammal native to the island—stands out, likely the most valuable piece in the exhibition.

Every visitor who comes to learn about the flora and fauna will not only observe existing species but also discover how Cuba’s ecosystem developed and transformed over millions of years.

The museum integrates clear and educational texts, contemporary museographic design, educational activities, talks, and temporary exhibitions. Everything is aimed at raising environmental awareness and reinforcing the value of Cuba’s natural heritage.

Al concluir, impresiona la réplica del Perezoso cubano, el más grande mamífero terrestre autónomo, posiblemente la pieza más valiosa de la instalación.

Todo visitante que viene aprender de la flora y fauna, no solo observará las especies existentes, sino del desarrollo cómo se formó y transformó el ecosistema de Cuba a lo largo de millones de años.

El museo integra, textos claros y didácticos. Diseño museográfico contemporáneo. Actividades educativas, charlas y exposiciones temporales. Todo está orientado a crear conciencia ambiental y reforzar el valor del patrimonio natural cubano.
