Today I have the pleasure of inviting you on a little sugary trip on the outskirts of Ciego de Ávila, in the municipality called 'Ciro Redondo', specifically to my grandparents' house. This ride was an unexpected family visit; I'll show you several surroundings, old warehouses, the headquarters of an important bioelectric plant, and the sugar mill, all from a friend's moto-taxi.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a dar pequeño viaje azucarero en las afueras de Ciego de Ávila, en el municipio llamado 'Ciro Redondo' específicamente hasta la casa de mis abuelos. Este paseo fue una visita inesperada a la familia, les mostraré varios alrededores, almacenes antiguos, la sede de una importante bioeléctrica y el central, desde el moto-taxi de un amigo.

To start the journey, let me tell you that nothing was planned. I just felt like going to see my grandparents and, while I was at it, pick up some pigeons that my cousin had bought for me in the town. It was a boring Sunday, with little activity on the streets and, as is customary in Cuba, no electricity at home.

The setting was perfect for going out to observe nature and rural life on the outskirts of Ciego de Ávila.

Para comenzar la travesía, les cuento que nada estaba previsto. Simplemente tenía ganas de ir a ver a mis abuelos y, de paso, recoger unas palomas que mi primo me había comprado en el poblado. Era un domingo aburrido, con poco movimiento en la calle y, como es costumbre en Cuba, sin electricidad en el hogar.

El escenario era perfecto para salir a observar la naturaleza y la vida campesina a las afueras de Ciego de Ávila.

So my brother and I decided to get ready, get dressed, and go for a family visit to the municipality of Ciro Redondo (Pina). The moto-taxi cost 7,000 Cuban pesos, but my cousin from the United States paid for the trip.

Normally when I go, I always stay for several hours, but this time it was a quick trip—just for the pigeons and to see my grandparents, who are always happy with a visit from their grandchildren, as well as to break the routine of staying home all weekend.

Así que decidimos prepararnos yo y mi hermano, vestirnos e ir a dar un paseo a la familia en el municipio de Ciro Redondo (Pina), el moto-taxi tuvo un costo de 7 mil pesos cubanos pero mi primo desde Estados Unidos pagó el viaje.

Normalmente cuando voy, siempre estoy varias horas pero esta vez era un recorrido rápido, para las palomas y mis abuelos que siempre están contentos con la visita de los nietos, además de salir de la rutina de quedarnos en casa todo el fin de semana.

As we began to leave the center of Ciego de Ávila, the sky, completely blue and clear, was adorned with large white clouds that foreshadowed another typical Cuban hot day among royal palms. The first few meters are quiet avenues with universal warehouses, perfect for strolling without hurry, enjoying every corner, and appreciating every little detail that awakens memories of my childhood.

This area is the ring road that leads straight to the town of Morón—right on the street to get to Pina and the same artery that runs all the way to the northern Cayos.

Comenzando a salir del centro avileño, el cielo, completamente azul y despejado, se adornaba con grandes nubes blancas que presagiaban otro día típico de calor cubano entre palmas reales. Los primeros metros son avenidas tranquilas con almacenes universales para andar sin prisa, disfrutar cada esquina y apreciar cada pequeño detalle que despierta recuerdos de mi niñez.

Esta zona es la circunvalación que lleva directo al poblado Morón justo la calle para llegar a Pina y la misma arteria que atraviesa hasta los Cayos del norte.

This stretch is known as Ceballos, outside the town, more rural, and nicknamed the land of oranges. Don't think taking photos while in transit is easy, haha. Many shots came out blurry or off-angle, but I tried to pick the best ones to present in the post.

On both sides, the green color of leaves, trees, and plains is abundant, due to the strong presence of agricultural activities. That's how daily life feels in these places, far from the hustle and bustle of big cities. As you can see, it's an environment with very little economic development, but with good people who want to get ahead.

Este tramo es conocido como Ceballos, fuera de pueblo, más rural y nombrado la tierra de la naranja. No crean que hacer fotografías en tránsito es fácil jjj. Siempre quedaban muchas corridas o fuera de ángulos, pero trate de escoger las mejores para presentar el post.

A los laterales es abundante el color verde de las hojas, árboles y llanos, por la fuerte presencia de actividades agrícolas, así se siente la vida diaria por estos lugares, lejos del bullicio de las grandes ciudades. Como se observa es un ambiente de muy poco desarrollo económico, pero con buena gente, que desea salir adelante.

As the moto-taxi moves forward, the landscape begins to change: the earth turns redder, and suddenly, a few buildings appear, then the park, along with the unique experience of the wind hitting your face, accompanied by the hum of the electric motor on both sides.

The entire surroundings seem to glide by slowly as the vehicle continues on its way toward Ciro Redondo.

A medida que la moto-taxi avanza, el paisaje comienza a transformarse: la tierra se vuelve más rojiza y, de pronto, aparecen algunos edificios, el parque, y la experiencia única del aire golpeando el rostro, acompañada del zumbido del motor eléctrico a ambos lados.

Todo el entorno parece deslizarse lentamente mientras el vehículo sigue su rumbo hacia Ciro Redondo.

Once we enter the municipality where I spent my entire childhood, I'll tell you that Ciro Redondo (Pina) is especially known for housing a sugar mill, one of the largest on the island, and for being the site of the important bioelectric plant built with Chinese technology that generates energy from sugarcane bagasse.

This facility is currently somewhat abandoned and deteriorated, due to the country's poor conditions for sustaining these types of plants and injecting a few watts into the national electrical system.

Entrado al municipio donde pase toda mi niñez, les comentaré que Ciro Redondo (Pina) se conoce especialmente por albergar un central azucarero, de los más grandes de la isla, y por ser sede de la importante bioeléctrica construida con tecnología china que genera energía a partir del bagazo de la caña de azúcar.

Esta empresa actualmente está un poco abandonada y deteriorada, por las condiciones pésimas que tiene el país, para sostener estos tipos de plantas, e inyectar al sistema nacional eléctrico algunos pocos de Watt’s.

In fact, regarding the historic name "Pina," the origins of the settlement are linked to the railway and the old stop located on land belonging to Severo Pina Marín in the city.

The railway presence remains part of the local identity—somewhat less functional now, but freight and passenger cars still operate on specific days due to the oil shortage.

De hecho el nombre histórico "Pina", los orígenes del asentamiento están relacionados con el ferrocarril y con el antiguo paradero situado en terrenos de Severo Pina Marín en la ciudad.

La presencia ferroviaria sigue formando parte de la identidad local, un poco menos funcional pero siguen trabajando los vagones de carga y públicos, días específicos por la escasez de petróleo.

The main purpose of the trip was to visit my grandparents, who are getting old—to see them, spend time with them, and give them some money as a gift, which helps a lot in getting by during these difficult times.

After that, the journey takes on another meaning, turning toward the search for the pigeons, which were a detail from my cousin. It's no longer just about arriving at a town. It's the welcome back to family, to its streets, to remembering those beautiful moments from my childhood, friends, and their memory.

Lo principal del viaje era visitar a mis abuelos que están viejitos, verlos, compartir con ellos y darles algún dinero de regalo que ayuda mucho a vivir en estos momentos difíciles.

Después, el recorrido adquiere otro sentido, hacia la búsqueda de las palomas, que fueron un detalle de mi primo. Ya no se trata solamente de llegar a un municipio. Es la bienvenida a la familia, a sus calles, a recordar esos momentos tan lindos de mi niñez, amigos y a su memoria.

Leaving was hard for me. I truly wanted to stay for hours, days, even a whole week, with everyone together. It's so beautiful—it really moves me.

This territory has extensive rural areas and lands dedicated to crops, pastures, and forested areas. Sugarcane has had a special weight in its economic development and even more so for the country.

Salir era difícil para mí. De verdad quería quedarme horas, días, incluso una semana entera, con todos reunidos. Es tan bonito, me da mucho sentimiento.

Este territorio posee extensas áreas rurales y suelos dedicados a cultivos, pastos y áreas forestales. La caña de azúcar ha tenido un peso especial en su desarrollo económico y más para el país.

That is why, on a journey like this, it is surprising to find large open flat spaces, facilities linked to the productive past, and roads that connect small communities with agricultural areas.

Arriving home, laden with memories, beautiful photographs, the birds, and moments that prove that the best adventures often begin with a simple unexpected walk. But above all, this experience was valuable because it was shared with family and, very especially, with our grandparents, whom we love so much.
Ciro Redondo is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful moments of my life.

Por eso, durante una travesía como esta, sorprende encontrar grandes espacios llanos abiertos, instalaciones vinculadas al pasado productivo y caminos que conectan pequeñas comunidades con zonas agrícolas.

Llegando al hogar, cargado de recuerdos, fotografías hermosas, las aves y momentos que demuestran que las mejores aventuras muchas veces comienzan con un simple paseo inesperado. Pero, sobre todo, esta experiencia fue valiosa por compartirla en familia y, muy especialmente, con nuestros abuelitos, a quienes tanto amamos. Ciro Redondo es, sin duda, uno de los momentos más lindos de mi vida.
