Did you know that in Old Havana, very close to the Museum of the Revolution, there is a National Palace of Fine Arts with spectacular collections of unique paintings and sculptures from the island? Interesting, right? Join me on this wonderful tour through the contemporary collections from after the Triumph of the Revolution after 1959!

¿Sabías qué, en la Habana Vieja muy cerca del museo de la Revolución, se encuentra ubicado un Palacio Nacional de Bellas Artes con colecciones espectaculares de pinturas y esculturas únicas de la isla. Interesante, ¿verdad? ¡Acompáñame en este maravilloso recorrido, por las colecciones contemporáneas posteriores al Triunfo de la Revolución después de 1959!

To begin with, I always try to capture unique photos along the way through the Havana avenues toward our destination. A bit of heritage treasure like the majestic Capitolio and, well, a sculpture of a woman's face, almost 2 meters tall in metal, looking toward the Malecón area.

To delve into what you will see today, I will tell you that this historical museum is responsible for treasuring, restoring, conserving, promoting, and researching the works that are part of Cuba's plastic arts legacy.

Para comenzar, siempre trato de captar fotos únicas del camino por las avenidas habaneras hacia nuestro destino. Un poco de joya patrimonial como el Capitolio majestuoso y bueno una escultura rostro de mujer, con casi de 2 metros de alto en metal mirando la zona malecón.

Para adentrarse a lo que observarán hoy, les diré, que este museo histórico, es el encargado de atesorar, restaurar, conservar, promover e investigar las obras que forman parte del legado plástico de Cuba.

The palace combines the codes of architectural rationalism with elements of Cuban colonial architecture. It was a restored barracks, originally built in 1764. It possesses a striking "Old World" elegance, brilliantly contrasted by the contemporary works exhibited throughout its magnificent halls and courtyards.

It houses the largest art collection in the Caribbean. Despite the ups and downs experienced by the country, it remains a fascinating cultural landmark, and a wonderful option for art lovers.

El palacio combina los códigos del racionalismo arquitectónico con elementos de la arquitectura colonial cubana. Fue un cuartel restaurado, construido originalmente en 1764. Posee una impactante elegancia del "Viejo Mundo", brillantemente contrastada por las obras contemporáneas que se exhiben a lo largo de sus magníficos salones y patios.

Alberga la colección de arte más grande del Caribe. A pesar de los altibajos experimentados por el país, sigue siendo un fascinante hito cultural, y una maravillosa opción para los amantes del arte.

Its central courtyard seeks to capture attention with a dialogue between rationalist architecture and the plastic arts, integrating sculptures both on the exterior facades and in interior spaces, a function that helped consolidate the building as a reference of Cuban modern architecture.

The day I visited, there was a retrospective exhibition by Manuel Mendive, a great interpreter of the Island, titled "Pan con guayaba, una vida feliz" (Bread with Guava, a Happy Life), featuring African religious items.

Su patio central busca captar la atención con un diálogo entre la arquitectura racionalista y las artes plásticas, integrando esculturas tanto en las fachadas exteriores como en espacios interiores, función que contribuyó a consolidar el edificio como referente de la arquitectura moderna cubana.

El día que fui de visita, estaba una exposición retrospectiva de Manuel Mendive, gran intérprete de la Isla, nombrada "Pan con guayaba, una vida feliz", con artículos religiosos africanos.

The following rooms show exhibitions of paintings and sculptures that are divided into large adjoining halls according to the different artists. They have very good lighting in most of the spaces, as well as an air conditioning system, something that is greatly appreciated due to the high temperatures of our island.

This room from after the revolutionary triumph offers a variety of modern paintings, with traits of Cuban identity, which can be observed calmly and without rushing. It offers guided tours in both English and Spanish, for those who love the history of each specific painting.

Las siguientes habitaciones muestran exposiciones de pinturas y esculturas que están divididas por grandes salas contiguas en función de los diferentes artistas, tienen muy buena iluminación en la mayoría de los locales, así como el sistema de climatización, algo que se agradece mucho por las altas temperaturas de nuestra isla.

Esta sala posterior al triunfo revolucionario, ofrece variedad de pinturas modernas, con rasgos de cubanía, que se observan con calma y sin apuros. Contiene visitas guiadas tanto en inglés como en español, para los más amantes de la historia de cada cuadro específico.

Many of the works come from revolutionary eras and martyrs of the homeland. I will tell you that if you come in a hurry, it's better not to enter the museum, because it took me about an hour to go through each of its rooms and spaces dedicated to Cuban art.

The museum's collections are organized by historical and aesthetic periods.

Muchas de las obras vienen dadas a épocas revolucionarias y mártires de la patria. Te diré que si vienes con apuro mejor no entres al museo, porque tarde cerca de una hora en recorrer cada una de sus salas y espacios dedicados al arte cubano.

Las colecciones del museo están organizadas por períodos históricos y estéticos.

On the other hand, for the more casual art enthusiast, written information is provided next to the exhibited works (author, title, material), so feel free to stroll through the exhibitions at your own pace and absorb the sense of expression and adventure that resonates throughout the building.

Currently, the work of artists in Cuba is not highly valued, which is why they emigrate to seek their fortune outside the island, but it is said that there is nothing better than the culture and art in a city, since this can say a lot about it, about how it develops.

Por otro lado, para el aficionado al arte más casual, se proporciona información escrita junto a las obras exhibidas (autor, título, material), así que siéntete libre de pasear por las exposiciones a tu propio ritmo y absorber el sentido de expresión y aventura que resuena en todo el edificio.

Actualmente no se valora mucho el trabajo de los artistas en Cuba, por eso emigran a buscar suerte fuera de la isla, pero se dice que no hay nada mejor que la cultura y el arte en una ciudad, ya que esto puede decir mucho de ella, de cómo se desenvuelve.

This place represents an incredible heritage for the country, as it is responsible for promoting and conserving all these ancient plastic works of great artistic value.

Some rooms have 50 meters of works around them; you can see imaginings impossible to decipher, as well as love, politics, war, historical figures, among other creations and sculptures.

Este lugar representa un increíble patrimonio para el país, pues está encargado de promover y conservar todas estas obras plásticas antiguas, de mucho valor artístico.

Algunas salas cuentan con 50 metros de obras a sus alrededores, lo mismo puedes ver imaginaciones imposibles de descifrar, que de amor, política, guerra, figuras históricas entre otras creaciones y esculturas.

These last rooms from after 1959 belong to young intellectuals who express their feelings through their hands. In the background, the oil paintings are worked with traits from expressionism, pop art, and folk art.

The truth is they are quite creative, like the large painting "Recibido en mal estado" (Received in Bad Condition) with ancient writings, religions, and eclectic elements within the heart.

Estas últimas salas posterior al 1959, son de jóvenes intelectuales que expresan su sentir mediante sus manos. En el fondo los cuadros sobre Óleo son trabajados con rasgos procedentes del expresionismo, el pop y el arte popular.

La verdad son bastante creativos, como el cuadro grande "Recibido en mal estado" con escritos antiguos, religiones y eclécticos dentro del corazón.

All the spaces are very originally decorated with statues from the era of modern emergence.

These following works will remind you of sayings if you know them, haha — they are by Flavio Garciandía. His work spans from photorealism and abstractionism to post-conceptualism, and he is known for his ironic style and his critique of art history.

Los espacios todos están decoradas muy originalmente por estatuas, de la época de surgimiento moderno.

Estas obras siguientes, te harán recordar si sabes de Refranes jaja, son de Flavio Garciandía su obra abarca desde el fotorrealismo, el abstraccionismo hasta el posconceptualismo, y es conocido por su estilo irónico y su crítica a la historia del arte.

It is really very well organized; at the entrance of each room there is an information card about the artists. Since it is so large and contains so many spaces, there are polished wooden benches everywhere for visitors to sit and take a break.

It is a very quiet atmosphere, where each visitor immerses themselves in the world of Cuban art; therefore, it is quite silent. All the rooms have specialists and guards. If any doubt arises or an explanation is needed, the specialists in each room explain without any problem.

Realmente esta muy bien organizado, en las entradas de cada sala hay una ficha de los artistas, al ser tan grande y contener tantos espacios hay por todas partes bancos de madera pulida para que los visitantes se sienten y tomen un descanso.

Es un ambiente muy tranquilo, donde cada visitante se sumerge en el mundo de las arte de cubanas, por lo tanto, es bastante silencioso, todas las salas tienen especialistas y guardias. Si surge alguna duda o se requiere alguna explicación los especialistas de cada sala, explican sin problemas.
