Hello travelers of the @worldmappin community!

Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to travel and walk through my province, Ciego de Ávila, known in the center of the island of Cuba as the city of portals. I will show you some architectural styles more than 100 years old, colonial buildings, parks, hidden stories, and the natural atmosphere of its streets as the day goes on.

I hope you like the anecdotes and enjoy each one of these landscapes and buildings. Join me on this wonderful tour!

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a transitar y caminar mi provincia Ciego de Ávila, conocida en el centro de la isla de Cuba como la ciudad de los portales. Les mostraré algunos estilos arquitectónicos con más de 100 años de antigüedad, edificios coloniales, parques, historias ocultas y ambiente natural de sus calles a medida que avanza el día.

This journey came to mind after having lunch following work. The streets were empty and perfect for telling mysterious stories about my city of Ciego de Ávila.

I remembered that, even on difficult days, we can always try again, get back up, and keep moving forward. Because moving forward doesn't mean the path is easy, but rather having the courage to keep walking, discovering, and learning a little each day.

Esta travesía se me ocurrió después de almorzar luego de salir del trabajo. Las calles estaban vacías y perfectas para contar historias misteriosas de mi ciudad avileña.

Recordé que, aunque haya días difíciles, siempre podemos volver a intentarlo, levantarnos y seguir adelante. Porque avanzar no significa que el camino sea fácil, sino tener el valor de continuar caminando, conociendo y aprendiendo un poco cada día.

Today I come to tell you about the mystery behind the Modestia N71 Lodge, a great brotherhood of Cuban Freemasonry, founded on the unshakeable pillars of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

This building has been standing for more than 100 years since its founding. It is somewhat hidden and no one knows what goes on inside. I only know that men in dark suits and ties enter, in total silence and respect. The city's first public library was once here; moreover, on its façade there are symbols that almost no one notices: the square, the compass, and the letter G.

Hoy vengo a contarles el misterio detrás, de la Logia Modestia N71, una gran hermandad de la masonería cubana, fundada sobre los pilares inquebrantables de la libertad, igualdad y fraternidad.

Este edificio lleva más de 100 años de fundado. Está un poco oculto y nadie sabe qué pasa dentro. Solo sé que entran hombres de trajes oscuros con corbata, en total silencio y respeto. Aquí estuvo la primera biblioteca pública de la ciudad; además, en su fachada hay símbolos que casi nadie mira, la escuadra, el compás y la letra G.

The photographs taken through my lens show precisely that mixture of quiet streets, columns, balconies, wooden doors, pastel colors, and buildings that are over a century old. It's not just about contemplating old constructions; it's about understanding how the city has lived around them, with so much wear and tear.

Now I'm on my way to another emblematic building, the Museum of Decorative Arts, formerly a nightclub in the 90s.

Las fotografías tomadas desde mi lente, muestran precisamente esa mezcla, de calles tranquilas, columnas, balcones, puertas de madera, colores pastel y edificios que superan el siglo de existencia. No se trata solamente de contemplar construcciones antiguas; se trata de entender cómo la ciudad ha vivido alrededor de ellas, con tanto desgaste.

Ahora voy camino a otro emblemático edificio, el Museo de Artes Decorativas antiguamente una discoteca en los 90s.

They say this colonial architecture housed the most intense nightclub in Ciego de Ávila. The stories were always the same: the most beautiful women in town, fights, long nights, memories, and the same songs from the Golden Age always playing.

I never went into that nightclub; at the time, I could only have been about 2 years old. But they told me so many anecdotes that I even ended up believing I was there too, haha. It was designed in the 1930s, was a Lyceum, then an Asturian center, and currently it is the Museum of Decorative Arts, in a state of internal renovation.

Dicen que esta arquitectura colonial albergaba la discoteca más intensa de Ciego de Ávila. Las historias siempre eran las mismas: las mujeres más hermosas de la localidad, peleas, noches largas, recuerdos y siempre sonando las mismas canciones de la Edad de Oro.

Yo nunca entré a esa discoteca; para entonces lo que podía haber tenido eran 2 años de edad. Pero me contaron tantas anécdotas que hasta terminé creyendo que yo también estaba allí, jaja. Fue diseñado en los 1930, fue un Liceo, luego un centro asturiano y actualmente es el Museo de Artes Decorativas, en estado de remodelación interna.

Leaving the city center, it becomes clear that it is an essential part of the local experience. Its façade belongs to that eclectic architecture that characterizes much of the city's historic center.

That visual journey allows one to understand something fundamental: the architectural heritage of Ciego de Ávila is best appreciated on foot.

Retirándome del centro, se nota que constituye una parte esencial de la experiencia local. Su fachada pertenece a esa arquitectura ecléctica que caracteriza buena parte del centro histórico de la ciudad.

Ese recorrido visual permite entender algo fundamental: el patrimonio arquitectónico avileño se aprecia mejor caminando.

Marcial Gómez Street takes me directly to the park where I often came to play as a child, since my father worked nearby at the National Insurance Company (ESEN).

As a child I believed this park was my favorite prize, but in reality I was the perfect excuse. They brought me here to distract me, but the plan wasn't mine. It is located right in the city center and almost no one stops here. I used to feel it was enormous, maybe because I was young or because I still didn't understand anything.

La calle Marcial Gómez me lleva directo al parque donde muchas veces vine a jugar de pequeño, pues mi padre trabajaba cerca de ahí, en la empresa de Seguros Nacionales (ESEN).

De niño creía que este parque era mi premio favorito, pero en realidad yo era la excusa perfecta. Me traían a distraerme, pero el plan no era mío. Está ubicado en pleno centro y casi nadie se detiene aquí. Antes lo sentí enorme, tal vez porque yo era joven o porque todavía no entendía nada.

They would say: "Let's take him to the park!" and I was happy, without suspecting anything. Right here, where the sculpture of Salvador Allende stands today, there was a bridge. That was my world. While I played, they lived their own story, conversations, and hours of work.

The park was restored a few years ago. It looks better, more cared for, painted, and ornamented, but it's no longer the same. Because places don't change that much; what changes is what we understand about them.

Ellos decían: ¡Vamos a llevarlo al parque! y yo feliz, sin sospechar. Justo aquí, donde hoy está la escultura de Salvador Allende, había un puente. Ese era mi mundo. Mientras yo jugaba, ellos vivían su propia historia, conversaciones y horas de trabajo.

El parque fue restaurado hace unos años. Se ve mejor, más cuidado, pintado y ornamentado pero ya no es el mismo. Porque los lugares no cambian tanto, lo que cambia es lo que entendemos de ellos.

That is why walking through my province every day is, in a certain way, walking through different chapters of its history at the same time.

Every façade, structure, or building is a page; every door, balcony, or column holds a story, and every street connects a past and a present.

Por eso, caminar cada día mi provincia es, en cierto modo, caminar por diferentes capítulos de su historia al mismo tiempo.

Cada fachada, estructura o edificio es una página; cada puerta, balcón o columna guarda una historia, y cada calle conecta un pasado y un presente.

Arriving at the end of my journey, I will tell you about what was a cafeteria that fed me throughout my childhood and later a burger place called 'La Jocuma'; just passing by here fills me with many memories.

Years ago, they sold some burgers here that were really delicious. People would line up like crazy. In the 90s you had to come with your ID card, check in at 10 at night, and the next day see if you got a burger.

Llegando al fin de mi travesía, les comentaré lo que fue una cafetería que me alimento toda mi niñez y luego una hamburguesería 'La Jocuma', el solo pasar por aquí me llena de muchos recuerdos.

Aquí años atrás vendían unas hamburguesas que estaban buenísimas. Se hacían unas colas de personas que era una locura. En los años 90 tú tenías que venir con el carnet de identidad, marcar a las 10 de la noche, y al otro día ver si te tocaba una hamburguesa.

Just imagine standing in line all night to see if the next day you could eat a burger.

Others will remember the Galician empanadas, the croquettes, the fried snacks, and when you were out on those Ciego de Ávila nights, right here next to it they sold some milkshakes that were really delicious in what is now a ruined house. I only came to tell you what I saw in my hometown and I ended up hungry, haha. Happy weekend, travelers' community!

Imagínate tú hacer una cola toda la noche para ver si al otro día podías comerte una hamburguesa.

Otros se acordarán de las empanadas gallegas, de las croquetas, frituras y cuando uno salía de las noches avileñas, aquí mismo al lado vendían unos batidos que estaban buenísimos en la casa destruida actual. Yo venía solamente a contar lo que vi en mi pueblo y terminé con hambre jaja. ¡Feliz fin de semana, comunidad de viajeros!
