Today I have the pleasure of inviting you to explore a bit of history and walk the streets of the province of Ciego de Ávila, from its urban architectural styles, an iconic bust, landscapes, and the natural environment of the everyday Avileño. I'll also present you with an encounter or chronicle of an abandoned zoo next to the railway, with its old cages and wide pathways that invite you to take your time exploring every corner.

Hoy tengo el placer de invitarlos a conocer un poco de historia y caminar las calles de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila, desde sus estilos urbanísticos, un busto icónico, paisajes y ambiente natural del avileño de a pie. También les presentaré un encuentro o crónica de un zoológico abandonado junto al ferrocarril, con sus jaulas antiguas y paseos amplios que motivan a andar sin prisa cada rincón.

In Martí Park in Ciego de Ávila, there is a hidden bust that does not face the statue of José Martí—today, almost no one can get close to it. That is no coincidence. It is looking toward a very specific place: his Home.

That house today is the 'Alfredo Miguel Aguayo' Elementary School. But before, it was something much greater. There lived Dr. Roberto Martínez Reyes, the physician who turned his home into a hospital, pharmacy, and shelter for the poor. He died in 1941, and the entire city of Ávila turned out to bid him farewell. That is why his bust does not face the park—it still looks toward his cabin, where even today, lives are being shaped, and the children bring that affection for the doctor.

En el Parque Martí de Ciego de Ávila hay un busto oculto que no mira a la estatua de José Martí, pues hoy casi nadie puede acercarse a él. No es casualidad. Está mirando hacia un lugar muy específico: su Hogar.

Esa casa hoy es la Escuela Primaria 'Alfredo Miguel Aguayo'. Pero antes fue algo mucho más grande. Allí vivió el doctor Roberto Martínez Reyes, el médico que convirtió su hogar en hospital, farmacia y refugio para los pobres. Murió en 1941, todo Ciudad Ávila salió a despedirlo, y por eso su busto no mira al parque, sigue mirando a su cabaña, donde todavía hoy se forman vidas y los niños aportan ese cariño por el doctor.

To continue the routine, I venture into neighborhoods farther from the historic center, where the features of the region's typical colonial architecture still stand out. Around them, structures rise, laden with anecdotes and unique designs, faithful reflections of their era of construction.

As you can see, it's a quiet day, in a town with little economic development, but with the will to move forward and improve its public transportation vehicles.

Para continuar la rutina, me adentro en barrios más apartados del casco histórico, donde aún resaltan las características de la arquitectura colonial típica de la región. A su alrededor, se alzan estructuras cargadas de anécdotas y diseños únicos, fieles reflejo de su época de fabricación.

Como se observa es un día tranquilo, con un pueblo de poco desarrollo económico, pero con ganas de salir delante y mejorar el avance de vehículos de transporte.

As you already know, Ciego de Ávila is known as the city of portals, so I walked a little deeper into its surroundings, slowly and enjoying the total silence in the streets.

The buildings that offered me their arcades and that you can see in the images were the Museum of Fine Arts, the Italian restaurant "La Romagnola," and the Spanish restaurant "La Confronta." All excellent places, not only for their architecture but also for the exquisite care put into preparing their food.

Como ya saben Ciego de Ávila es nombrada la ciudad de los portales, pues camine un poco más profundo sus alrededores, despacio y disfrutando del silencio total en las calles.

Las edificaciones que me brindaron sus soportales y que pueden apreciar en las imágenes fueron el museo de Bellas Artes, el restaurante de comida italiana "La Romagnola" y el de comida española "La Confronta". Todos excelentes lugares, no solo por su arquitectura, sino también por la exquisitez en la elaboración de sus alimentos.

Just a few steps from the railway, the photographs reflect a calm city, with clear streets and a typical slow pace, where the real life of Cubans is mirrored, and where sidewalks are a key element.

Right now, my country is going through its worst moments in the economic, social, and political spheres. Due to these current conditions, it is even difficult to appreciate beautiful photos, because of the extreme deterioration.

A pocos pasos del ferrocarril, las fotografías reflejan una ciudad calmada, con calles despejadas y un ritmo pausado típico, donde se refleja la vida real del cubano, en el que las aceras son un elemento clave.

En estos momentos, mi país está atravesando los peores momentos en el ámbitos económico, social y político. Pues debido a estas condiciones actuales, resulta hasta difícil apreciar fotos bonitas, por el deterioro extremo.

Here is located the Municipal Services Company (COMCAVILA), which is in charge of maintaining green areas and producing charcoal.

It is also responsible for keeping the city looking clean and well-maintained, and for facing the challenges of the Cuban economy with a commitment to internal efficiency. Nowadays, I don't think it is meeting its objectives at the national level.

Aquí se ubica la Empresa de Servicios Comunales (COMCAVILA) es la encargada del mantenimiento de las áreas verdes y la producción de carbón vegetal.

Además se encarga de que la ciudad luzca limpia y cuidada, y enfrente los retos de la economía cubana con una apuesta por la eficiencia interna. Hoy en día no creo que cumple sus objetivos a nivel nacional.

This next site holds a very special story for the people of Ávila: it was an old popular dream that took decades to come true and became a symbol of the city after the triumph of the Revolution.

Maceo Park, with its bust in honor of the "Bronze Titan," stands in front of the railway. A reconstruction project has been proposed to restore its splendor and cultural significance, as it is currently somewhat deteriorated.

Este sitio a continuación contiene una historia muy especial para los avileños: fue un viejo sueño popular que tardó décadas en hacerse realidad y que se convirtió en un símbolo de la ciudad tras el triunfo de la Revolución .

El parque Maceo con su busto en honor al "Titán de Bronce" se presenta frente al Ferrocarril, se ha planteado la necesidad de un proyecto de reconstrucción para recuperar su esplendor y cultura, pues actualmente está un poco deteriorado.

This is the other side of Maceo Park, but there was a time when it looked like a zoo in the middle of the city. Yes, right here there were monkeys, ducks, flamingos, and even stories that today sound made up.

In the center, a moat with water and a huge ceiba tree that crowned everything, as if the park had its own heart. There were two cages with monkeys; one of them was named Titi, and they say he used to fall in love with the pretty women who walked by the park.

Esta es la otra parte del Parque Maceo, pero hubo un tiempo en que parecía un zoológico en medio de la ciudad. Sí, aquí hubo monos, patos, flamencos y hasta historias que hoy parecen inventadas.

En el centro, un foso con agua y una ceiba enorme que coronaba todo, como si el parque tuviera su propio corazón. Había dos jaulas con monos, uno de ellos se llamaba Titi y dicen que se enamoraba de las mujeres bonitas que pasaban por el parque.

Others remember the fright—children who got too close and the monkey would grab their hair. Ducks, geese, flamingos... the park wasn't just visited, it was lived. Today all of that has disappeared and it's in total neglect, but if you grew up here, you know that this place was much more than an avenue; it was childhood, it was wonder, and for many, the first place where we saw Mother Nature up close.

Today it is a railway, a starting point for this means of transport to the provinces and municipalities for moving people or essential food supplies. Leaving my home, I was able to see the departure of one that was loaded with sugarcane cars.

Otros recuerdan el susto, niños que se acercaban demasiado y el mono les agarraba el pelo. Patos, gansos, flamencos, el parque no solo se visitaba, se vivía. Hoy todo eso desapareció y es total abandono, pero si creciste aquí sabes que este lugar fue mucho más que una avenida, fue infancia, fue asombro y para muchos el primer lugar donde vimos cerca la madre naturaleza.

A día de hoy es un ferrocarril, un punto de partida de este transporte a las provincias y municipios para su traslado de personas o alimentos de primera necesidad. Saliendo de mi hogar pude apreciar la salida de uno que iba cargado con vagones de caña de azúcar.

This tour shows that history is not always found inside a museum; often it remains alive in monuments, parks, century-old trees, and forgotten spaces that still have much to tell.

Walking through my Avileño town is like browsing an album of living memories. It is a story that, despite the years, remains stuck in very poor economic development, with colonial structures preserved for tourism.

Este recorrido demuestra que la historia no siempre se encuentra dentro de un museo; muchas veces permanece viva en monumentos, parques, árboles centenarios y espacios olvidados que aún tienen mucho que contar.

Andar mi pueblo avileño es como apreciar un álbum de recuerdos vivos. Es una historia que a pesar de los años se mantiene en desarrollo económico muy pobre, y estructuras coloniales conservadoras para el turismo.

The fruit and vegetable sales areas express the island flavor and breathe calm, while people move about with that mix of tranquility and energy so characteristic of central Cuba.

My attention was caught by a classic old blue 1955 Chevrolet, a legend on the streets of my country. These cars are not just a means of transportation but also a major attraction for foreigners.

Las áreas de ventas frutales y vegetales expresan el sabor isleño, respiran calma, mientras la gente transita con esa mezcla de tranquilidad y energía tan propia del centro de Cuba.

Captó mi atención un clásico vehículo Chevrolet del 55 antiguo de color azul, una leyenda en las calles de mi país. Estos coches no solo son un medio de transporte, sino una gran atracción para los extranjeros.

More than just a walk through the city, this experience is an invitation to rediscover urban heritage, value collective memory, and reflect on the importance of preserving those places that are part of Avileña identity.

Each step reveals a different story and confirms that the past is still present for those who take the time to explore it with curiosity.

Más que una simple caminata por la ciudad, esta experiencia es una invitación a redescubrir el patrimonio urbano, valorar la memoria colectiva y reflexionar sobre la importancia de conservar aquellos lugares que forman parte de la identidad Avileña.

Cada paso revela una historia diferente y confirma que el pasado sigue presente para quienes se toman el tiempo de recorrerlo con curiosidad.
