When your surprise surprises you!

I see people pulling up big surprises for people and I can’t help but smile every single time, I had always thought pulling up a surprise wasn’t that hard until it was me and my colleagues turn to surprise our boss.

My Boss’s birthday was on the 21st of November, we had been planning for weeks for his big day and he insisted we shouldn’t do anything but we were adamant.

First, he caught us when we went to his favorite restaurant to make inquiries about his birthday dinner, apparently, he was tracking the office car we used which we had no idea. We tried to convince him that it was for another person but he kept insisting that he was right and his confidence stemmed from we using him last year to surprise our former Project Manager. Finally, we scrapped the birthday dinner and decided to do something small at the office.

He kept warning us not to do anything for him. He moved from warning us to begging us not to do anything but we refused to listen.

This part of him got me thinking because all through the little years I've lived on this planet, I've never seen a person beg so much as he did as a lot of people would jump on the opportunity, especially my gender(female) as some of them are willing to distribute their account details to every living soul, seeking birthday support like it’s a donation program.

He told us countless times that he was going to ruin our surprise before we even set it in motion, we kept on doubting him until a day before his birthday

Three of my colleagues and I decided to decorate his office by 5:30 pm since he closes by 5 pm but to our greatest surprise, the young man did not close by 5 or 5:30. why that day of all days we wondered.

While we got tired of waiting for him to close we decided to start blowing the balloons so that once he left it would be easier to decorate his office but guys we were totally wrong! That was just the beginning of our doom!

While looking for a suitable place to blow the balloons we decided to use the kitchen as it was not too close and not too far from his office. We started by blowing the balloons, after successfully blowing a handful, the balloons ganged up to embarrass us by collectively agreeing that some of them were going to burst and you all know the type of sound that they make.

The sound was loud and sharp and it was more like they were taking turns to carry out this crazy act and while all of this was happening Mr. Alain’s office door was open. Instinctively I had to go to his office to distract him, with every bang, I would have to laugh hysterically to distract him, I kept on laughing until I couldn’t laugh anymore. Like, I tried to fake it but no way, my laughter was turning to more of a whimper and I couldn't just continue with the drama. If I had known that such drama would occur I would have done enough laughing rehearsals.

Miraculously, it was as if the balloons heard my pleas and decided to cooperate.

While trying to keep Mr. Alain company and my colleagues finishing up with the balloons Mr. Alain started checking the CCTV, immediately he opened it I could see the kitchen door but good thing there was no camera in the kitchen so my colleagues were saved but not for long.

While seated in his office the next thing he said was that he needed to take his coffee and Mr. Alain doesn’t allow anyone to make his coffee or food as he is a germaphobe. At that moment my heart left my body, and I knew we were screwed. Not thinking of anything else to dissuade him I started telling him of the disadvantages of taking hot coffee when it was scorching hot, I honestly don’t know where all my crazy facts were coming out from but I heard myself talking and soon enough I was able to change his mind.

Just when I wanted to make the victory dance Mr.Alain decided to give me another panic attack by going to the store room very close to the kitchen and my girls were in there with the balloons. All I could do then was beg the balloons to cooperate again and not let out a loud cry. It was so serious that my girls literally held their breath while Mr.Alain made multiple trips to the store room. I was sweating and my heart was beating so fast, this was supposed to be our perfect surprise for him, not an action movie where we were about to get killed!

The balloons being all cooperative again decided to hold their fire until Mr Alain was back in his office, at that moment I just wanted to give all the balloons a big hug for sparing us.

My girls were already texting me that they wanted to go home, suddenly they all felt claustrophobic which was understandable. Going home was another challenge we encountered while trying to pull up this grand surprise of ours. Mr. Alain was actively checking the camera as he was monitoring something downstairs and he knew everyone on that floor had gone home so any sudden movement, he would be able to see it on the camera.

We moved from wishing he should go home to praying to God not to get caught. All of this was happening by 6:30 pm.

The moment Mr. Alain stood up to talk to his driver I immediately ran to the kitchen like Flash to free my people, they all tiptoed out of the kitchen and out of the office. I was left with the sole responsibility of protecting the kitchen from Mr. Alain.

The universe was on my side as I did it and he finally left the office by 7:30.

The next day we succeeded in finishing up the surprise but this was one damn action movie that I don’t want to be part of again!
