Sin alternativas. ¡Un viaje en bicicleta!/ No alternatives. A bike trip!

Hello, friends who are reading this. Faced with the difficulties of public transportation and the fuel shortage, we have to look for alternatives. This situation isn't unique to Cubans, so I'm sure many of you know what we're going through.

For years, public transportation in Cuba has been a problem for all kinds of errands: personal, family, health, and others. This has led people to look for alternative ways to get from one place to another. Of course! Everyone, based on their economic means, has bought their own motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, and electric tricycles, and those who could afford it have even bought modern, state-of-the-art cars.

On the other hand, others with a traditional bicycle, powered by pedals and human energy, are managing, although the hardest hit are those who have no means of transportation at all. And let me be clear, this situation doesn't discriminate based on professional level; for example, whether you're a doctor, teacher, engineer, graduate, or a renowned scientist. On the contrary, other factors are involved, and the solution will be long-term.

But what I wanted to get to! As I was saying, finding alternatives is all that's left around here, and yesterday was one of those days for me. I hadn't seen my family in a while; they live about 16 km from my house, so I had to travel from Pinar del Río (the municipality where I live) to San Juan y Martínez (the municipality where they live). It seems like a short trip, but a round trip by bicycle in the same day, with the sun and heat, and the potholes and ruts in the road... Wow, this can be quite a challenge!

Yesterday I woke up early (the sun was already out, warming the air), grabbed my bike, and without much thought, set off on my adventure. I assure you it had been over 20 years since I'd ridden such a long bike ride; it's truly exhausting. But since it's good to distract the mind, I embraced this trip as a distraction; a little exercise is good for the body and soul. I also took the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, nature, and the wind; a slow and calm journey can be conducive to that.

During the ride, I was struck by the increase in the number of cafes and roadside food vendors; given the complex situations they face, the Cuban people are forging ahead with new ventures and family businesses (I didn't take pictures of them), which is truly commendable. I was also struck by how practically empty the road remained throughout the entire trip, with very few vehicles on the road and just me and a few other adventurers on bicycles.

The ride was actually a bit tiring, due to the hills along the way; in some places I had to get off my bike and walk to avoid exhausting myself and to save energy for the return trip, which is undoubtedly a bigger challenge, because when I come back from the countryside I always bring provisions for several days. As a friend says, "That's one of the advantages of having family in the countryside."

One of the interesting things about this route, in my opinion, is that after you've ridden about 8 km and are leaving the border of the Pinar del Río municipality, the road winds between the boundaries of two municipalities: San Luis on the left, and San Juan y Martínez on the right. Both are internationally recognized tobacco-growing municipalities. So, the stretch is about 5 km, and I'm much closer to home.

An hour on the bike and I was already arriving at my younger sister's house. It's been our meeting point for several years now, where we all get together. I always take advantage of my time there to take a walk around the neighborhood. That's where I grew up, that's where my roots are, and that's where I'll always return. It's strange how the emotions get mixed up: those that come from the absence of those who are no longer physically present, my childhood memories of playing and running through those fields, and those conveyed by family and friends who still live there.

¿Y cómo voy a estar tan cerca y no voy a ir a mi casa?

And how can I be so close and not go to my house? I don't know if you feel the same way; we children grow up, we get married, we move, but whenever we say “I'm going to my house”, we're referring to our parents' house, the one where we grew up. Even though circumstances have changed and I spend most of my time with my sisters and nephews, I always go to my little green house; that was my mom's favorite color, and in my memories, it's always been green. My dad always joins us there.

To my surprise, my sisters had fresh corn to cook; that's another thing I hadn't done in years. One of them, my dad, and I sat down to cut and husk the corn. Personally, it's one of the things I enjoy, and it even helps me unwind. And since such a long trip should be enjoyed to the fullest, I brought my corn cobs and kernels to make some good Cuban tamales (I'll try to make a Venezuelan hallaca, they're fantastic) and a Cuban-style corn stew.

As you read, the day was fantastic, an exhausting trip but one I made the most of. I spent the whole day with my family; we talked, caught up, and above all, recharged our emotional batteries. This is more necessary for life than the fuel to run the cars of Cuban public transport and thermoelectric plants, which we all so desperately need.

And how wonderful to have at least this bicycle that takes me as far as my feet can pedal. From what I can see, this transportation situation will continue, so if you're reading this and you're in a similar situation, don't hesitate—a bicycle could be the solution.
