Fire Scare at St. Patrick's Square

This is a weekend memory pulled from years ago when we went to attend the morning Sunday mass at St Patrick's Cathedral in Auckland, NZ. The Cathedral is the mother church of the RC Diocese of Auckland and is strategically located in the city's CBD on its own compound called St. Patrick Square.

According to Wiki, the Cathedral was founded in 1841 and the current church building was established in 1907 so yes, it's over a century-old!

Anyway, when we arrived at the square, the Priest was already there and was catching up with a few church goers by the entrance. At least we were not late, lol!

I took this shot as we got closer to them in the main entrance. This was on a November by the way, it was spring on the country's season and that particular morning was just so awesome.

I'm digressing too much.

I don't exactly remember how it began but while we were inside and mass was going on, the fire alarm sounded so everyone rushed outside to different directions. Some across the road from the main entrance, others on towards the left side of the square and we found ourselves by the right.

The Fire Service came quickly so I was very impressed of how efficient they were. It adds that the Central Fire Station was in the CBD too so it's in proximity to the location.

After the firemen checked and declared everything was safe, we went back in to continue with the halted service. It was a false fire alarm and I now wonder what caused it, oh my memory fails me so I guess it is good to post it this time on the blockchain while there's still some remnants in my memory bank. It was a bit of an experience for me.

Took these shots after the mass as we left.

And whilst my friend went to another place on an errand, I decided to go for a walk along Queen Street where I had some moments with the winking Santa.

From there I proceeded to Victoria Street towards the Sky Tower. More on that will probably be shared on another time.

By the way, how are you today?

It's a rainy Saturday here in my side of the world. It's been so for a few days already. It seems the Habagat season finally came and we expect more monsoon rains throughout the month. I hope it won't last long though, excessive rain often makes me feel so down.

Cheers to the weekend everyone!

Oh gosh, such a beautiful cathedral. The color is quite plain, but since no photos are uploaded what's inside. I bet the interior designs are lit.

I actually zoom the face of Santa, and his eyes are so good. Perhaps the fire alarm rang because some kids pressed it.

Love it!

Since it's a Catholic church, maybe it's smoke from burning incense that caused the false alarm. A thick enough smoke is strong enough to trip of a fire alarm. I am glad it was just a false alarm and I am impressed by the prompt response of the fire service

You are right about the incense smoke. The fire service was impressive indeed, they were quick to respond.

It's quite unusual to see a church next to office buildings in such proximity...
Thanks for sharing!

Maybe someone tampered with the fire alarm system. If something like that happens here, the fire fighters will get there hours after the alarm goes off 🤣. They are not serious here.

I wonder if someone did :)

There are places like that, fire trucks coming late, some due to traffic or others inefficient.

Glad that it was a false alarm. That would have been a tragedy to damage such a beautiful structure.

What a beautiful Cathedral. When I saw the name of it before I saw where it is I immediately thought of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City here in the US. Happy that it was only a false alarm and noone was hurt and nothing was damaged.

So glad it was a false alarm CJ.
Being from the UK it is so strange seeing a Roman Catholic church that looks so new!

Hi sis!
Good thing it was a false alarm, it must be scary to be in a church full of people and have the fire alarm go off. I remember years ago in the building where I worked here in Caracas that had about 20 floors there was a fire alarm and they evacuated us and it was very stressful.

And speaking of Santa, wow September is around the corner, and you start celebrating Christmas, right?

It was quite a scare but yours must be even more especially if you're in the higher floors. It's hard to imagine getting evacuated. There must have been panic around.

Yes, September is coming. I wonder if people here will still celebrate that early hehe. But maybe, some still would play Christmas songs soon, lol!

I remember it was a bit stressful, I was on the 11th floor and people were coming down the stairs. I remember a work colleague who was an expat told me to take my shoes off so I wouldn't fall down the stairs, hehe She seemed to have some experience in evacuating procedures. In the end, they had us downstairs in the street for a couple of hours but it turned out to be a false alarm, thank god.

Morning morning when you wake up :)

Oh my... Thank goodness it was a false alarm. Experiencing such can make us a bit panicky at times. So nice of your colleague to share what she knows :)

Thank you sis and Happy Sunday evening to you :)
