Ganesh Chaturthi is the traditional Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. In the early days, the celebration started in private households and later turn into a major movement in india and around the world.

The Ancient texts like Puranas, mention about the celebrations done by families to worship Ganesha for new beginnings and harvest.

In the 1600s, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj promoted public celebrations. He used it to build unity and pride among his people

In 1893, Lokmanya Tilak, the freedom fighter revived the festival into the grand public event. During that period, Britishers had banned large public gatherings. Lokmanya Tilak used the ten-day festival to bring the indians irrespective of caste or creed together to share ideas and protest against british rule.

In the morden world, large mandals in metro cities set up huge community tents called pandals. Millions come out to visit them. Mumbai becomes vibrant during the festival. The famous one is the lagbaugcha Raja.

Familes bring Ganesha idols to their home to worship during this period.

Ganesh puja is done everyday during this period and lots of people come to attend them from various parts of the world. The big Pandals have big Ganesha Idols which tells a story. Every pandal has a story to tell.

The Ganesha idols were initially made of plaster of paris. This created a lot of environmental issues, after the 10 day period when the idol was submerged into sea /river/lakes. But this has changed. Nowadays, the Ganesha idols are made from clay, which dissolves in the water easily. This solves one of the enironmental issue.

Ganapati Visarjan (immersion) by the families is generally done between 1 to 3 days. Some do it after 5 days. Pandals do the Ganapati Visarjan (immersion) between 7 to 10 days.

On Ganapati Visarjan (immersion) day, the devotees bid farewell and goodbye by doing a pooja and then immerge the Ganesha Idol into lakes, rivers or sea. Some do it at home by filling water in big buckets and submerge the Ganesha idols.

The Ganesha Festival is celebrated all over the world.

A vibrant festival that brings joy to all. Doesn't matter what caste or creed you belong to.
