Inicia en un pueblo desconocido. La cámara sigue a un hombre de espaldas, caminando hacia un edificio. Entra a una habitación y la recorre. Observa por una ventana, mira el piso, todo normal hasta que de pronto se agacha cerca de la pared y acerca su oído para proceder a escuchar, unos segundos, lo que parecen ser sonidos de ratas dentro del delgado espacio que divide las paredes del edificio. Escribiendo una carta sentado en el escritorio, una voz comienza a narrar a medida que él escribe.

It starts in an unknown town. The camera follows a man with his back turned, walking towards a building. He enters a room and walks through it. He looks out a window, looks at the floor, everything normal until suddenly he crouches down near the wall and brings his ear close to listen, for a few seconds, to what seems to be the sounds of rats inside the thin space that divides the walls of the building. Writing a letter sitting at the desk, a voice begins to narrate as he writes.

Comienza presentándose como Wilfred Leland James y menciona que la carta es su confesión sobre algún crimen que había cometido. Procede a decir que la razón que lo llevó a cometer su delito fueron 40 hectáreas de tierra en un pueblo llamado Hemingford Home en Nebraska las cuales fueron heredadas por su esposa Arlette cuando su padre falleció.

He begins by introducing himself as Wilfred Leland James and mentions that the letter is his confession about some crime he had committed. He proceeds to say that the reason he committed his crime was 40 acres of land in a town called Hemingford Home in Nebraska which was inherited by his wife Arlette when her father died.

Mientras ésto es narrado, pasan del hombre y comienzan a mostrar el lugar del que habla y presentan a su esposa con un hermoso vestido parada en las escaleras de la entrada de su casa. El narrador, (el cual es el mismo Wilfred), cuenta que él sumó esas cuarenta hectáreas a la granja que poseían, planeando que todo eso lo heredara su único hijo Henry. Más adelante parece un Wilfred más joven al lado de su hijo de 14 años, enseñándole a conducir un camión viejo de la familia. Wilfred continúa narrando su carta y dice que en ese año, 1922, el orgullo de un hombre eran sus tierras y su hijo.

As this is narrated, they pass the man and begin to show the place he is talking about and introduce his wife in a beautiful dress standing on the front steps of their house. The narrator, (which is Wilfred himself), tells how he added those forty acres to the farm they owned, planning for it all to be inherited by his only son Henry. Later, a younger Wilfred appears at his 14-year-old son's side, teaching him to drive an old family truck. Wilfred goes on to narrate his letter and says that in that year, 1922, a man's pride was his land and his son.

Luego de ambos, Wilfred y Henry, trabajar en las tierras familiares, están en su casa tomando un poco de limonada que hizo Arlette, la cual describen como "una limonada perfecta". Wilfred comenta en lo que escribe, que su esposa jamás logró encariñarse con la vida de granja y campo, y procede a mostrar aquella noche cenando los tres, en la que su esposa le hace saber que quiere vender la granja y las tierras para irse del pueblo. After both Wilfred and Henry work on the family land, they are at home drinking some lemonade that Arlette made, which they describe as "perfect lemonade". Wilfred comments in his writing that his wife has never been able to get attached to farm and country life, and proceeds to show the three of them having dinner that night when his wife lets him know that she wants to sell the farm and land and leave town. Disagreeing with her, Wilfred says that towns are for fools and followed by his son saying he has the same thinking as his father and that he doesn't plan to move anywhere else. Defeated, Arlette says they will talk about it later.

Minutos más tarde, cuando ella está intentando dormirse, con una mirada molesta y decepcionada la mira Wilfred desde fuera de su habitación. La mañana siguiente, luego de que él pasara la madrugada caminando por las tierras, se encuentra debatiendo con Arlette sobre lo que harán con su situación. Wilfred dice que si no se ponen de acuerdo ella debería irse a casa de su madre, pero ella se enoja diciendo que nunca lo dejaría con las tierras de su padre. Él, un poco avergonzado, le propone comprar él mismo las tierras y que las pagaría en un plazo de ocho años, o tal vez diez. Ella se burla de Wilfred y dice que otra familia la comprará y que tendrán una oferta mucho mejor que esa.

Minutes later, as she is trying to fall asleep, with an annoyed and disappointed look Wilfred watches her from outside her room. The next morning, after he has spent the early morning walking the grounds, he finds himself debating with Arlette about what they will do about their situation. Wilfred says that if they don't agree she should go home to her mother, but she gets angry, saying she would never leave him with her father's land. He, a bit embarrassed, proposes to buy the land himself and that he would pay for it within eight years, or maybe ten. She scoffs at Wilfred and says that another family will buy it and that they will have a much better offer than that.

Arlette procede a contarle un mejor plan y dice que al vender las hectáreas, podrían dividirse el dinero y divorciarse, cosa que Wilfred no se esperaba. Ella prosigue mencionando que ambos saben que eso quiere él, y Wilfred sólo pregunta con quién se quedará Henry, a lo que Arlette, segura, responde que un chico de esa edad debe estar con su madre. Wilfred difiere y comenta que para Henry no sería justo que ella le quite todo lo que él conoce, y Arlette enojada y alzando la voz le dice que la vida no es justa.

Arlette proceeds to tell him a better plan and says that by selling the acreage, they could split the money and get a divorce, which Wilfred did not expect. She goes on to mention that they both know that's what he wants, and Wilfred just asks who Henry will stay with, to which Arlette, confident, replies that a boy that age should be with his mother. Wilfred differs and comments that it wouldn't be fair to Henry for her to take away everything he knows, and Arlette angrily and raising her voice tells him that life isn't fair.

Wilfred dice que necesita pensarlo y se acaba la conversación. Luego de unas tomas de las tierras de maíz y del atardecer en el cielo, muestran a Wilfred sentado viendo la noche mientras fuma un poco, y de fondo la voz del narrador comentando que en ese momento, como esposo, pensó en ir con la ley, pero que algo lo detuvo; fue el odio que había llegado a tenerle. En la mañana mientras ella recoge la ropa, él la interrumpe y sin contexto le dice que ya decidió que ella no vendería las tierras. Confundida y burlona le pregunta por qué está seguro de eso y él le dice que no las venderá al menos no sin pelear.

Wilfred says he needs to think about it and the conversation ends. After a few shots of the cornfields and the sunset in the sky, they show Wilfred sitting watching the night while smoking a little, and in the background the narrator's voice commenting that at that moment, as a husband, he thought about going to the law, but that something stopped him; it was the hatred he had come to have for her. In the morning while she is picking up the laundry, he interrupts her and without context tells her that he has already decided that she will not sell the land. Confused and mocking she asks him why he is sure of that and he tells her that he won't sell it, at least not without a fight.

En un intento fallido de llamar su atención, Arlette intenta gritarle pero se arrepiente porque él la ignora. Más tarde ese día, cuando él está sentado frente a su casa, ella llega en la camioneta de alguna empresa y pasa al lado de Wilfred con una sonrisa de ganadora. Al rato Wilfred baja al sótano y encuentra a Henry con su novia a solas. Le pide un momento para hablar y ella rápidamente agarra sus libros y se va a su casa. Henry ese año se había enamorado de Shannon, una chica rubia y de buen corazón. Suceso que Wilfred usó a su favor.

In a failed attempt to get his attention, Arlette tries to yell at him but regrets it because he ignores her. Later that day, when he is sitting in front of his house, she arrives in some company van and drives past Wilfred with a winning smile. After a while Wilfred goes down to the basement and finds Henry with his girlfriend alone. He asks her for a moment to talk and she quickly grabs her books and goes home. Henry that year had fallen in love with Shannon, a kind-hearted blonde girl. An event that Wilfred used to his advantage.

Se lleva a su hijo a caminar por las tierras y habla con él sobre las cosas que se están saliendo de control en el hogar. Su hijo asiente y él continúa hablando de que cuando las cosas no van como quieren, deben manejar las cosas a su manera, aún si alguien sale herido, o aún si alguien muere. Henry se confunde y su padre hace referencia a que si su madre, Arlette, no estuviera ellos vivirían en paz, sin discusiones y felices. Manipulandolo, Wilfred le hace saber que él ha intentado de todo pero que Arlette no cede ante sus peticiones, así que hay sólo una cosa que "ambos" pueden hacer para estar en paz.

He takes his son for a walk around the grounds and talks to him about things getting out of control at home. His son nods and he goes on to talk about how when things don't go their way, they have to handle things their way, even if someone gets hurt, or even if someone dies. Henry gets confused and his father makes reference to the fact that if his mother, Arlette, were gone they would live in peace, without arguments and happily. Manipulating him, Wilfred lets him know that he has tried everything but Arlette won't give in to his requests, so there is only one thing "both of them" can do to be at peace.

Luego de conversar, mientras Wilfred está arriba en el baño afeitando su barba, observa cómo afuera Arlette llama a Henry (quien estaba a punto de irse) y le dice que le dé un beso. Henry se regresa a ella y al mirarla toma una actitud cerrada y evasiva, ella le pregunta qué pasa pero él dice estar bien y se va sin darle un beso. Wilfred se siente ganador; logró que su hijo se desinteresara un poco más por su madre. Conversando con Henry en el campo, llegaron a hablar sobre qué pasa cuando un hombre o mujer mueren asesinados.

After talking, while Wilfred is upstairs in the bathroom shaving his beard, he watches Arlette call out to Henry (who was about to leave) and tells him to give her a kiss. Henry turns back to her and looking at her takes a closed and evasive attitude, she asks him what's wrong but he says he's fine and leaves without giving her a kiss. Wilfred feels like a winner; he has succeeded in making his son a little more disinterested in his mother. Chatting with Henry in the field, they get to talking about what happens when a man or woman is killed.

Wilfred le dice que si es asesinado antes de cometer un pecado, todos los errores quedarían perdonados. Henry, no convencido, le dice que ellos irían al infierno si cometen un asesinato, pero su papá le dice que aún así ella quiere llevarlo lejos y que convertirá a Henry en lo que menos quiere: un chico de ciudad. En la noche mientras cenaban, Henry no tocó la comida de su plato lo cual molestó a Arlette.

Wilfred tells him that if he is killed before he commits a sin, all mistakes would be forgiven. Henry, unconvinced, tells her that they would go to hell if they commit murder, but his dad tells him that she still wants to take him away and will turn Henry into what he wants the least: a city boy. In the evening while they were eating dinner, Henry didn't touch the food on his plate which upset Arlette.

Mientras ésta se quejaba de eso, Henry le grita que se fuera de su casa y los dejara a él y a su padre en paz para que puedan volver a ser una familia. Arlette lo golpea y dice que venderá las tierras y que su hijo se va con ella para abrir una tienda de ropa. Así que el plan de Wilfred es que al día siguiente le dice a Arlette que cambiaron ambos de opinión y que se irán juntos a la ciudad. Arlette, feliz por la noticia, se lanza sobre Wilfred y lo besa. Más tarde en la noche, los tres estanan sentados bebiendo. Y Arlette muy ebria, empieza una incómoda conversación sobre la vida sexual de Henry, cosa que lo molesta mucho y se va dentro de casa.

While she was complaining about it, Henry yells at her to get out of his house and leave him and his father alone so they can be a family again. Arlette beats him and says she will sell the land and that her son is going with her to open a clothing store. So Wilfred's plan is that the next day he tells Arlette that they both changed their minds and that they will go to the city together. Arlette, happy about the news, throws herself on Wilfred and kisses him. Later in the evening, the three of them are sitting around drinking. And Arlette, very drunk, starts an awkward conversation about Henry's sex life, which annoys him a lot and he goes inside the house.

Al rato Wilfred intenta subir por las escaleras a Arlette muy borracha, y al acostarla en su cama se dirige a la otra habitación, donde Henry se encontraba ansioso. Su padre una vez más intenta manipularlo y cuando Henry se queja de las cosas que su madre dijo de su novia, él le dice que su madre es así y siempre lo será. Henry llora al darse cuenta que la única opción que de verdad tienen es deshacerse de su madre para siempre. Ambos bajan a la cocina y toman un cuchillo y una bolsa. Al subir a la habitación, Henry sube a la cama, se despide de su madre dormida y pone la bolsa sobre su cara, pero ella despierta y comienza a luchar, por lo que rápidamente Wilfred se sube sobre ella y le corta el cuello repetidas veces.

After a while Wilfred tries to carry Arlette up the stairs very drunk, and as he lays her down on her bed he goes to the other room, where Henry was anxious. His father once again tries to manipulate him and when Henry complains about the things his mother said about his girlfriend, he tells him that his mother is like that and always will be. Henry cries as he realizes that the only choice they really have is to get rid of his mother for good. They both go down to the kitchen and grab a knife and a bag. Going up to the bedroom, Henry climbs into bed, says goodbye to his sleeping mother and puts the bag over her face, but she wakes up and begins to struggle, so Wilfred quickly climbs on top of her and slashes her throat repeatedly.

Mucha sangre y mucha pelea después, Arlette muere en su cama. Envuelven su cuerpo en sábanas y ambos la cargan para llevarla a un profundo pozo que tienen fuera de su casa, pero casi al llegar Henry se desmaya, por lo que Wilfred debe arrastrarla como puede hasta el pozo y finalmente la deja caer entre la infinita oscuridad debajo de la tierra.

Much blood and much fighting later, Arlette dies in her bed. They wrap her body in sheets and both carry her to take her to a deep well they have outside their house, but almost upon arrival Henry faints, so Wilfred must drag her as best he can to the well and finally drops her into the infinite darkness beneath the earth.

Es así como comienza la verdadera historia detrás de la culpa y paranoia que vive Wilfred James cuando en 1922 asesinó a su esposa. Sin duda una película digna de ver y analizar que muestra cómo el ego y la avaricia logran sacar el peor lado de las personas, así como también muestra el poder que tiene la manipulación sobre la debilidad en los más vulnerables. Contiene algunas escenas que más que suspenso, hacen que las emociones salgan y la ansiedad de qué va a pasar luego hace la película aún más interesante. La recomiendo muchísimo, siempre será de mis thrillers favoritos.

This is how the true story behind the guilt and paranoia that Wilfred James lives when in 1922 he murdered his wife begins. Undoubtedly a film worth watching and analyzing that shows how ego and greed bring out the worst side of people, as well as the power of manipulation over weakness in the most vulnerable. It contains some scenes that more than suspense, make the emotions come out and the anxiety of what is going to happen next makes the movie even more interesting. I highly recommend it, it will always be one of my favorite thrillers.
