A look at the Meliá Cohiba hotel [esp/eng]

In tourist facilities, the lobby area is one of the areas that should have the greatest impact on the visitor, since it will be the first thing he/she encounters upon entering the hotel, and it offers a first impression of the hotel. Therefore, finding a properly designed and decorated space, clean and with adequate lighting, guarantees the possibility of attracting a potential client. It is essential that this first contact is recorded as a pleasant memory, and that a cordial treatment by all the staff is added.

En las instalaciones turísticas, el área del lobby es de las que más impacto debe causar en el visitante, debido a que será lo primero que encuentre a su entrada al hotel, y ofrece una primera impresión del mismo. Entonces encontrar un espacio debidamente diseñado y decorado, limpio y con una iluminación adecuada, garantiza la posibilidad de captar un posible cliente. Se hace imprescindible que ese primer contacto quede grabado como un recuerdo agradable, y que se adicione un trato cordial por todo el personal.

I begin with the above reflection because that was the impression I had when I entered the Meliá Cohiba Hotel, which is one of the most iconic and well-known hotels in Cuba, and is located just one block away from Havana's Malecón. Undoubtedly, it has a privileged position for lovers of the sea and its constant swaying.
When I entered the hotel, where I was only there for business purposes, I was amazed by the feeling of hygiene and order that is immediately perceived. The floors have a shine that allows you to identify the images as if they were mirrors. Most of the supporting furniture is black, which contrasts very well with all the abundant lighting of the place.
I was pleased to find several floral arrangements with natural plants, which looked very fresh in their colors, and were chosen and arranged with grace and good taste. Nowadays there is a tendency to use artificial plant decorations, which do not require constant attention and have a very long useful life. But, in my opinion, they do not bring the same vitality to the environment.

Comienzo con la anterior reflexión porque esa fue la impresión que tuve al entrar al hotel Meliá Cohiba, que constituye uno de los hoteles más icónicos y conocidos de Cuba, y se encuentra ubicado a solo una cuadra del Malecón habanero. Sin dudas, tiene una posición privilegiada para los amantes del mar y su constante vaivén.
Cuando entré al hotel, donde solo estuve por cuestiones laborales, quedé asombrada por la sensación de higiene y orden que se percibe enseguida. Los pisos tienen un brillo que permite identificar las imágenes como si fueran espejos. La mayoría del mobiliario de apoyo es negro, lo que contrasta muy bien con toda la abundante iluminación del local.
Me gustó encontrar varios arreglos florales con plantas naturales, las cuales lucían con mucha frescura sus colores, y estaban escogidas y dispuestas con gracia y buen gusto. Actualmente existe una tendencia a usar decoraciones con plantas artificiales, que no requieren una atención constante y tienen un tiempo útil bien prolongado. Pero, desde mi criterio, no aportan la misma vitalidad en el entorno.

In the hotel there is an art gallery located on the second floor, where the works on display are changed regularly and are for sale. Restaurants and other points of sale, gym, spa and swimming pool are also located on that floor.
Likewise, the figures that adorn the hotel lobby are also part of the art show. My favorite figure is a white porcelain cat standing in a very nice position, with several spheres of different colors in its eyes. These same spheres are transferred to the top of the table where it is located.

En el hotel existe una galería de arte que se encuentra ubicada en la segunda planta, y donde las obras que se exponen se cambian con regularidad y se encuentran a la venta. En esa planta también se encuentran los restaurantes y otros puntos de venta, gimnasio, spa y piscina.
Igualmente, las figuras que adornan el lobby del hotel también forman parte de la muestra de arte. Mi figura preferida es la de un gato de porcelana blanca que está parado en una posición muy simpática, y en los ojos tiene varias esferas de distintos colores. Estas mismas esferas se trasladan al sobre de la mesa donde está ubicado.

The hotel's furnishings are varied, but elegant and comfortable. You can find large square armchairs that are upholstered in white, with four-seater sofas that have satin cushions that move in shades of gray and brown.
You can also find other types of furniture, such as tables in precious wood with upholstered chairs. This furniture has a more classic touch, but it fits perfectly because they provide a lot of elegance in a place with a more modern design.

El mobiliario del hotel es variado, pero elegante y confortable. Se pueden encontrar grandes butacas cuadradas que están tapizadas en color blanco, con sofás para cuatro plazas que tienen cojines de satén que se mueven en tonalidades grises y carmelitas.
También se puede encontrar otro tipo de mobiliario, como lo son las mesas en madera preciosa con sus sillas tapizadas. Este mobiliario tiene un toque más clásico, pero se acopla perfectamente porque proporcionan mucha elegancia en un sitio con un diseño más moderno.

The corridors of the hotel are wide and illuminated, and also its walls have large paintings and decorations with flowers, showing a harmony in all the spaces.

Los pasillos del hotel son amplios e iluminados, e igualmente sus paredes poseen grandes cuadros y decoraciones con flores, demostrando una armonía en todos los espacios.

One of the paintings that I considered most impressive is the one located at the end of the reception bar, because it shows a photo of the hotel's façade from some nearby point in the city, and the monochromatic tonality used gives the idea that it is an image of the past.

Uno de los cuadros que consideré más impactante es el ubicado al final de la barra de la recepción, porque muestra la foto de la fachada del hotel desde algún punto cercano de la ciudad, y la tonalidad monocromática usada da la idea de que es una imagen del pasado.
