The Shortest Day Of The Year Is Here - Slightly Brighter Short Films

Today December 21st is the shortest day of the year and the sun rises at 9:43 and sets at 15:01 here in Tampere, Finland. To celebrate this, here's my short movie and animation list for this year. As usual, two posts coming, one for the bright day and one for the dark night.

Let's get to it then shall we? Courageously just do what you want, I mean, what could go wrong?

Oh Darrel, oh Darrel. Good things happen. Just not to you. But things could also be worse. You could have been the cute girl. (I did mention in the tittle: slightly brighter...)

Let's see what happens to these knitted friends.

Sort of a happy ending. Hopeful at least.

I have to say that I truly admire puppet animations. The physical objects truly come alive and the amount of work that is put to build everything must be just staggering. There's no short cuts, no previous scenery libraries or algorithms that you can use to generate the characters. You have to build everything with your hands.

Here's a second one.

But of course CGI animations can also be mind blowing. Especially if they mimic real life and do it well. Or mimic puppet animations. All the beauty of fine details and also the endless possibilities of believable movement and other textures that aren't possible with puppets or miniatures.

Here's one and of course there has to be at least one about Santa since Christmas eve is so close.

HO! HO! HO!

Next one. Dream and believe. Life is a bit of a disappointment sometimes but you have to be persistent and not let the reality discourage you.

Dream BIG!

Moving on to cats.

So true. So adorable. Cats.

I think that's enough for now, I'll schedule the second part to the exact time when the sun sets (Finnish time) and I promise you, it's time to go properly to the dark side.

Some cool-looking shorts! I will give it a watch with the kid later! we have longer days now here on the other side of the equator! Summer is in full force! Enjoy your snow, though!

Yeah, aren't they great! These tickled me the most. These shorts are kid friendly but I should warn you that the next ones might not be. So you should first check them out and choose what to watch with your kid. Fortunately one can always just go deep in to the YouTube limbo and choose the ones YouTube suggests.

I could almost kill for more sun. Though snow is fine I guess. I should be happy with what we have here now but... yeah... 😁

Lol thanks for the warning! Can't be worse than those kiddy influencer shit on the YouTube! Really the worst adults to do that to their kids!

I'll soak up some vitamin d for you. Enjoying the swims although my favourite beach is filled with poop!

Well none of the animations have sex or nudity in them, which I guess is considered more dangerous than war and violence which I think is pretty messed up.

Enjoying the swims

I'm envious. Soooooooo envious.

my favourite beach is filled with poop

Well not anymore. That really brightened my day! Thanks! 😁

I am just amazed to hear that sun rises at 9:43. At my place it shines brightly at this point of time. Time is a mysterious thing.

I wanna know if it is you who made the puppet for this animation movie. It is not an easy work I can imagine

Yeah and in the midsummer the summer doesn't set (almost) at all. Only couple of hours are considered night time this high north and those hours usually aren't even quite dark.

I found all these animations from YouTube. None of those are made by me.

Ohh! Then how do you manage your routines? I think sun has affects on our routines no matter how strict we are with our clocks.

I don't know. Fine I guess. The lack of light or the lack of darkness affects people differently but people who have lived here longer have gotten used to it better. The bright time is never the same because the day of course constantly either gets few minutes shorter or longer every day depending if your going towards summer or winter so you get used to it. And of course during the summer, if brighter nights (the sun being near the horizon in the night but still visible) are keeping you awake, there's always dark curtains. I have thick black curtains in my bedroom.

I always get more things done in the spring and summer as it's brighter as I'm such a sunlight oriented person. And I don't actually feel tired even if I sleep less. But in the fall and winter I feel like I could go and hibernate. Although I take extra vitamin D and have lights here at my home, for the plants mostly, the darkness outside, lasting 19 hours is really depressing. But fortunately after this day, the day is getting longer, minute by minute.

Inavaiablity of sun light causes a kind of tiredness in our body. Though in Pakistan we don't have this much difference in day and night across the year. The longest day is around 14 hrs, while the shortest is about 10 hrs. This difference has an effect on my level of activity. During winter, I feel irritated by the lack of light as windows are closed unlike summer. I keep the lights on.

I sort of thought that the fox will knit the dino back again. Although the first attempt was a failure, my imagination said she will try again. Sad story but really well built, the idea was great and so was the final result.

And so she tries and tries and is stuck in trying to bring something back she cant. Yea.. pretty depressing and sad.

They are all very well done.

Perhaps she is Fox the Frankenstein and the dino will rise again someday.
