FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY | How a rock melon can ROCK my day...

I've always favoured eating rock melons more than honeydew melons; maybe it's because it is more crunchy and the orange color flesh is more welcoming as compared to the off-white flesh of a honeydew. Nevertheless, I was still hesitant to buy a whole rock melon as I wasn't sure if I would be able to finish it. Last weekend, I decided to give it a try and went ahead to buy from my usual fruit seller. She was pleasantly surprised that I opt for a whole rock melon instead of my usuals - dragon fruit, guava, mango and plum.

This whole fruit cost me VND40,000 = MYR7.21 = USD1.72. Not sure if it's considered cheap since I've never bought a whole fruit before. But, it does weigh more than 1kg, that's for sure. After getting home, I decided I should cut it open and remove the skin, clean it up and store into small containers so that I can enjoy it easily.

The skin is hard so using a sharp butcher knife is the best way to cut it open. I had to remove the the skin right until I reach the orange color flesh. Even the light greenish part is still considered to be the skin and if eaten, it does taste bitter. As for the center, I could either use a spoon to scoop the seeds out or cut it out using a paring knife.

I prefer to use a paring knife as it way more cleaner than using a spoon. Cutting the whole fruit into 4 sections, I placed it nicely on the chopping board for my photo-taking before removing the skin.

Doesn't it look very juicy and inviting. I have to say I was indeed very happy with the selection of the rock melon which the fruit seller chose for me. I wouldn't have known if it was ripe.

Sadly, after removing the skin, I was left with only 2 small containers of ready to eat rock melon. Not as much as I had expected from a whole fruit. I was a bit disappointed. All the hard work to carry this whole fruit home and cutting it up only to have so little to enjoy. Anyhow, it was really sweet and crunchy which made it all worth it at the end.

Would I buy another whole rock melon the next time around?
Maybe...it's still a nice fruit to enjoy.

I'll definitely share more in my next post. Hope you enjoy my photo taken from my Huawei

Ha ha.. I know the feeling.
I just ate two whole guavas for my dessert.
Way much better than eating any sweet desserts

Ooh yum. I haven't had one of those yet this year, though I did buy a whole watermelon this weekend that I need to cut open today. It is a lot of work to remove the rind, but I still think it's worth it in the long run with the price usually. My melon is almost 14 pounds! (about 6.3 kilograms) Cheers to plenty of yummy fruit for the week!

Wow.. that's a huge water melon you have there.
The melons I see here are way much smaller. In a way I'm glad, at least I know they don't spray any form of pesticides to make it grow big and sweet.
Stay safe :)
