Wednesday Walk | Nguyen Hue TET Flower Parade

avatar

I've always looked forward to this time of the year when the famous Nguyen Hue, Walking Street in HCMC is fully decorated and transformed into one of the largest Flower Parade I've ever seen. It is an annual ritual to have this street all lighted up and people from near and far come here to take photos with families and friends. The entire area is filled with TET, Vietnamese Lunar New Year atmosphere which is fantastic. Those who come here would be all dressed up in their traditional Ao Dai and take photos around Nguyen Hue.

Due to the recent rise of Covid-19 cases in HCMC, the local authorities have cancelled the official launch of the Flower Parade which was scheduled on 9 February. In addition they have also initiated strict guidelines such as opening hours are limited between 8am to 5pm daily, everyone to wear mask and controlled entry/exit points. For some reasons, I'm really glad that such practices are being enforced and that the local council is fast to set new rulings for the purpose of its citizens safety.

Of course, it didn't stop me from visiting one of the landmarks of HCMC during the TET festival. Instead, I just had to plan my timing properly so that I did not drop by when the crowd is here. The best time is actually during the lunch hour as it's too hot for many people to visit. Residents here don't like to carry umbrellas so which is great for me. I didn't have to fight my way through the crowd or models or photographers; I had the whole area to myself to take as many selfies as I want.

Like I said earlier, the guidelines are more strict. There was only 2 entry into the Flower Parade and 6 exit points. Everyone who wanted to enter the Flower Parade had to sanitize the hands first and temperature checking is a MUST. The authorities even gated the entire compound so no one could climb over the fence to enter illegally. Police enforcements were everywhere; in uniform and plain clothes too. They even control the movement of people within the area. No one is allowed to walk backwards as in; it's a one-way straight parade. I didn't know that until one of the police officers politely reprimanded me for walking backwards.

All in all, it was a nice experience since a lot of effort was put in for this Flower Parade. I do wonder how much did the HCMC Council put in for this 7 day parade 🤔

Well.. if you're ever considering to visit HCMC during the TET festive season, be sure to visit Nguyen Hue. It's a great place to get lots of contents for blogging.
