“Stonka" (“Colorado Potato Beetle” ) or SM42- part 2/ SM42- czyli "Stonka"- część 2

The SM42 (design type 6D; factory designations Ls800E and Ls800P – I don't know why the designations are so complicated) is a diesel locomotive designed for heavy shunting work and hauling light freight trains. Of the 1,822 units produced, over 1,200 were still in service in 2024. Between 1972 and 1975, 37 locomotives were exported to Morocco for use on the local railways. Production continued (with a break) right up until 1992, during which time the locomotives underwent numerous modernisations. Work to modernise these locomotives began just one year after production ceased. Several variants were produced: 6Dc, 6Dd, 6De, 6Dg, 6Dh-1, 6Di, 6Dk and 6Dm. These differed in terms of their level of modernisation and appearance, which varied from that of the basic model. This post will only feature photos of the classic models.

SM42 (typ konstrukcyjny 6D, typy fabryczne Ls800E i Ls800P- nie wiem po co takie komplikowanie oznaczeń) to lokomotywa spalinowa przeznaczona do ciężkich prac manewrowych, a także prowadzenia lekkich pociągów towarowych. Spośród wyprodukowanych 1822 egzemplarz, w 2024 roku istniało jeszcze ponad 1200 sztuk. W latach 1972–1975 37 lokomotyw wyeksportowano 37 do Maroka, dla tamtejszych kolei. Budowane (z przerwą) aż do roku 1992 doczekały się licznych modernizacji. Już rok po zakończeniu produkcji rozpoczęto modernizacje tych lokomotyw. Powstało kilka typów (6Dc, 6Dd, 6De, 6Dg, 6Dh-1, 6Di, 6Dk, 6Dm, 18D) różniących się zakresem modernizacji i wyglądem odbiegającym od podstawowego. W tym poście będą tylko zdjęcia klasyków.

SM42-2122, with a private operator’s working formation, spotted in Braniewo. Standing next to it on the platform is SA106-009 from Olsztyn, which has just arrived at its terminus. Take a look at the sky – the colour is strange; could it be dust from the Sahara? There was no information about this at the time.

The last photo shows a run-of-the-mill SM42-2622, which I photographed on 12 April 2017 at Warszawa Zachodnia station during some never-ending renovation work, even before the recently completed major refurbishment.
