CineTV Contest: Chariots of Fire
There are many types of rivalries, however, in sports rivals are not necessarily natural enemies, that is, there is no dichotomy between good and evil, they each face common dreams and goals and therefore only circumstances They have made this rivalry possible. For me, the best film that shows a rivalry as something positive is Chariots of Fire (1981), it is based on a real event, it deals with the rivalry of two athletes from the same nation and their struggle to achieve glory in the 1924 Olympics. .
They were young British but from very different cultural, social and economic origins, on the one hand there was Eric Liddell, he was the son of Christian missionaries, he was born in China but later returned to Scotland, he was known for being a great Rugby player, he was a preacher but he loved sports and felt that part of God's will was for him to run, he was very kind to people and had the support of everyone around him, on the other hand, Harold Abrahams was a different person in many ways In some ways, he studied at Crambridge and he was an excellent athlete, an exceptional runner, Jewish and this was like a stigma in a British society that was mostly Christian, at university although he has the support of his peers, he feels he has to demonstrate even more his value as an athlete and as a person, he feels that personal pressure to be the best because as a Jew he has something to prove that others do not, in a nutshell he is a person with a great spirit of fighting
As you can imagine, the rivalry between the two athletes began to grow, however, this was not an enmity, each one had to meet their goal and they were in the same place to achieve it, both fought to go to the Olympics, people had their favourite, some supported Liddell and others Abrahams, but after all both were part of the British team that went to the Olympics, however people were expecting who would stand out between them in the Olympic races, but Once the schedule for the Olympics was known, something incredible happened, since the 100-meter race was scheduled to take place on Sunday, so Liddell, due to his religion, refused to participate in a race that day, which for a reason moment put the British team under a lot of pressure.
Then a colleague gave him the position to participate in the 400 meter race that would take place on another day of the week, so Abrahams, who had no problem running on Sunday, won the gold medal in the 100 meter, while Liddell won the gold medal in the 400 meters. Both athletes returned to their country as heroes, Abrahams achieved his greatest dream, that his entire country recognized his value, while Liddel would later go on a missionary because it was his dream.
Some people have favoritism in sports, many times they ignore the effort, the determination and the motives that each athlete keeps within himself, this film moved me because it shows what true rivalry is, the one that drives each one to improve and give the best of himself, although the film shows Abrahams as a person with a big ego, he has his reasons because he feels that people do not see him the same for being Jewish, at the same time Liddell's motives are equally important, his faith is what motivates him, however, he did not agree to break his beliefs to obtain a medal on Sunday, that is, he was a man who defended his principles, which showed that he did not do it for fame, nor for trying to being superior to others, showed that he loved the sport but even so this was not everything for him, a decision that could be criticized but showed a lot of courage.
Everywhere we see how rivalry is shown between opposing teams, other parties, other nations, but for me the rivalries that people have with their teammates is more impressive, because we know very little about this and sometimes it is only shown in a negative way. as happened a famous case a few years ago in figure skating where one competitor ordered another to attack, but movies like Chariots of Fire show us very sincerely how the rivalry between competitors from the same team or country does not have to be negative , each one goes for their dreams and they respect each other.
